How to navigate the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and protect your company.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly changing how businesses operate, and what safeguards we must use to protect ourselves from potential threats.

The rapidly changing pace of AI development is being compared to that of the Industrial Revolution, as it enables us to perform work at a groundbreaking pace, facilitates new job roles, and even automates certain tasks. However, not all AI providers are created equally; they come with risks, errors, biases, and potential entry points for cybercriminals.



As an Employee

You need to ensure your use of AI does not put your company at risk or endanger your job security. Keep in mind that patches in AI updates can put you at risk of cyberattacks.

If your company does have AI guidelines, make sure to follow them, and ask questions if you have any. If your company does not allow AI use, do not use it, as some programs and platforms can detect AI use.

If your company does not have AI guidelines, be careful with any confidential or proprietary information. You should also be cautious about certain AI interfaces that agree with you no matter what, which can create AI confirmation bias. Make sure to double-check any material created with AI, just as you would work you had created without AI.



As a Business

You are responsible for setting guidelines and policies for how employees can use AI for company use and on company-provided devices. C-level teams should develop company-wide AI guidelines to help employees navigate its use. It may also be necessary to add a head of AI or someone responsible for enforcing AI guidelines and providing any necessary training.

Set up safeguards to ensure that critical information, such as company secrets or critical code, does not fall into the wrong hands.

Not all AI providers are created equally; some have advantages/ disadvantages, and sometimes the best approach is to use several AI providers to reach your business goals. What works for one company may not be the best approach for another.

If there is an AI provider that does not align with your company, make sure to outline and restrict its use.

If there is an AI provider that aligns with your company's needs, set up an enterprise account and stipulate that all AI usage must come from that account and provider.

Credits are AI's lifeline; specify that they must be used for business-related work and set limits on certain activities to prevent misuse and unexpected costs. AI training can also help employees learn how to use AI more efficiently.

AI agents can help you expand your business with minimal investment, improving your companies offering and leverage.

Keep up to date on the latest security bugs and patches. Most AI providers reward handsomely for finding security bugs, but they still exist, and they can serve as entry points for Cybersecurity attacks.
