Known as the "Gateway to the West", Xi'an serves as a core national comprehensive railway hub in China.

Six major national trunk railways intersect here, connecting Xi'an to all provincial capitals and four municipalities directly under the Central Government including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chongqing. Direct trains also run to numerous popular tourist destinations such as Guilin, Dunhuang, Luoyang, Suzhou, Qingdao and Huashan Mountain.

Multiple high-speed railways converge in Xi'an, including the Xuzhou-Lanzhou High-speed Railway, Datong-Xi'an High-speed Railway, Xi'an-Chengdu High-speed Railway, Xi'an-Yan'an High-speed Railway, Wuhan-Xi'an High-speed Railway and Xi'an-Chongqing High-speed Railway. Passengers can reach Beijing, Shanghai, Wuhan, Chengdu and Shenzhen within 10 hours via high-speed trains.

Railway Stations

Xi'an railway hub adopts a "four main passenger stations plus one auxiliary station" layout. The four major passenger stations are Xi'an Railway Station, Xi'an North Railway Station, the newly opened Xi'an East Railway Station and Yinzhen (Xi'an South) Railway Station. Freight-only stations are excluded from passenger services.

Xi'an Railway Station

Located inside the city proper adjacent to the ancient city wall, it remains the key hub for conventional trains (Z, T, K, fast trains). Around 250 passenger trains stop here every day, operating overnight sleeper services to Beijing, Shanghai and other major cities. Main destinations include Shanghai, Pingyao, Datong, Chengdu and Luoyang.



Metro Line 4 provides direct underground access to the station via the dedicated Xi'an Station Metro Stop, with underground walkways connecting seamlessly to the station's South Square. Visitors may also alight at Hanyuan Hall Station (also on Line 4) and walk about 5 minutes to reach the station's North Square. An alternative transit route is taking Metro Line 1 to Wulukou Station, then walking roughly 500 meters north to the station entrance.

It stands right opposite Xi'an Long-Distance Bus Station for seamless intermodal transfer. Local public buses and tourist shuttle buses are available outside both north and south station plazas.

Xi'an North Railway Station

This dedicated high-speed rail hub operates over 345 pairs of bullet trains daily. It links Xi'an with Beijing, Datong, Pingyao, Luoyang, Zhengzhou, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Yan'an and many other cities.

Metro Line 2 provides the most convenient direct access from downtown Xi'an to the station's South Square; Metro Line 4 serves the North Square.

Xi'an East Railway Station

Launched together with the Xi'an-Shiyan High-speed Railway, Xi'an East Railway Station is a large integrated transport hub handling both high-speed EMUs and conventional trains. It runs 110 pairs of passenger trains daily, including 79 EMU pairs and 31 regular train pairs.

It connects the Xi'an-Yan'an, Wuhan-Xi'an and Xi'an-Chongqing High-speed Railways, with direct routes to 45 cities nationwide: Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Wuhan, Chongqing, Chengdu, Kunming, Qingdao, Yan'an, Hanzhong, Ankang, Shiyan and Xiangyang included. Travel time from Xi'an East to Wuhan takes only 2 hours and 41 minutes.

Metro Line 5 directly reaches the station; passengers only need a 5-minute walk from the railway arrival hall to the metro entrance.

Bus terminals, taxi stands and ride-hailing pick-up zones are arranged separately for efficient transfers.

Yinzhen Railway Station (Formerly Xi'an South Railway Station)

Situated in the southern suburbs, around 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) from downtown Xi'an. A small number of conventional trains bound for Ankang, Yichang, Guiyang and other southern cities stop here. Only 2 ticket windows are set up, with one usually open for service. Take Bus 918 to reach the station; travelers from downtown can transfer to Bus 918 at Hangtiandadao West Stop.

Interchange Guide Between Major Railway Stations

1. Transfer between Xi'an Railway Station and Xi'an North Railway Station

Bus Route 266

Stops at West Exit of Xi'an Railway Station (walk 250 meters west from the station exit). The trip takes about 1 hour with a fare of CNY 1. Buses run every 10–20 minutes from 06:00 to 23:30 daily. Prepare small RMB notes and keep personal belongings safe during the ride.

Metro Transfer (Recommended)

Take Metro Line 4 directly from Xi'an Railway Station to Xi'an North Railway Station North Square (around 35 minutes, CNY 4 per trip).

Alternative route: Line 2 from Xi'an North to Xingzhengzhongxin Station, transfer to Line 4 to Xi'an Railway Station. Line 1 first-generation interchange described in the original text is outdated and no longer the optimal route.

Taxi / Ride-hailing

Taxi stands are located outside station exits. The ride takes roughly 30 minutes with a fare of about CNY 50, subject to traffic conditions.

2. Transfer between Xi'an Railway Station and Xi'an East Railway Station

Take Metro Line 4 to Qinglongsi Station, transfer to Metro Line 5 towards Chuangxingang, and alight at Xi'an East Railway Station. The whole journey takes about 40 minutes with a fare of CNY 4.

3. Transfer between Xi'an North Railway Station and Xi'an East Railway Station

Option 1: Take Metro Line 2 to Nanshaomen Station, transfer to Metro Line 5 to Xi'an East (around 50 minutes).

Option 2: Dedicated high-speed rail connecting line between the two stations for train transfers without exiting the railway system.

Ticket Services

Passengers can purchase and collect online tickets at Xi'an Railway Station, Xi'an North Railway Station, Xi'an East Railway Station and Yinzhen Railway Station. Around 120 offline authorized ticket offices across the city also offer ticketing services.

Located to the northwest of Xianyang city, Xi'an Xianyang International Airport is 47km (29 miles) to the northwest of downtown Xi'an.

Brief Intro

The construction of Xi'an Xianyang International Airport symbolizes the rapid development of the aviation industry in China. It covers an area of 1.1 million square meters. Its spacious concourse provides a refreshing openness not normally found in other international airports, and creates an enjoyable trip right from the beginning.

At present, it operates 239 air routes, covering 194 domestic routes and 45 international & regional routes to 188 cities worldwide. Flights leaving from the airport connect many domestic cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Guilin, Lijiang, Shenzhen, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Yiwu, Anqing, Tangshan and Yichun. International flights reach Hong Kong, Taipei, Seoul, Phuket, Osaka, Chiang Mai, Okinawa, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Maldives, Helsinki, Moscow, and Paris, plus many Central Asian, Southeast Asian and intercontinental destinations across the Belt and Road.

Tips:

Domestic Flights

Check-in counters close 35 minutes prior to scheduled departure at T2 and T3, and 30 minutes prior to scheduled departure at T5.

Passengers taking domestic flights are advised to arrive at the airport 1.5–2 hours in advance for T2/T3, and 2–2.5 hours ahead for T5.

International, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan Flights

Deadlines vary by airline:

Airlines operating routes to Japan, South Korea and Southeast Asia close check-in counters 60 minutes before departure.

Chinese carriers operating international services shut their check-in counters 40 minutes prior to takeoff.

All cross-border flight passengers should complete check-in procedures at Terminal 5 and arrive at the airport 2.5–3 hours ahead of scheduled departure.

Baggage Trolley: Free baggage trolleys are available in all terminals (T1, T2, T3, T5) and parking lots.

Public Payphones: Accessible barrier-free public payphones are provided throughout the terminals.

Prepaid IC cards for payphones: Sold at Gate 4 of the Departure Hall on 2F, T2.

Drinking Water: Self-service drinking water fountains are installed in passenger zones of every terminal.

Sleepbox (Take a Nap Rest Pods)

The airport provides rest pods in T3 and Basement 1 of T5; pods in the connecting corridor between T2 and T3 have been removed.

Each pod measures 2.7 meters (8.9 ft) in height and covers an area of 3 square meters (32 sq. ft), with a compact cabin-style design. Every pod is equipped with one single bed (corrected from the original wrong description of two beds), a television, Wi-Fi, reading lamp, safety locker and dressing table.

Current charging standard (subject to on-site adjustment): CNY 30 for the first 30 minutes, CNY 60 per hour for the first two hours, and CNY 40 per hour starting from the third hour.

Tips for Taking a Taxi in Xi'an

1. Hailing on-street taxis is difficult during two peak periods: morning rush hour 07:30–08:30 and evening rush hour 17:30–19:00. Availability also drops sharply during the driver shift change window of 15:00–16:30. During shift change, most drivers only pick up passengers heading the same direction as their return depot.

2. For smoother trips during busy hours, book vehicles in advance via mainstream ride-hailing platforms including DiDi Chuxing, Caocao Mobility, Amap Ride-Hailing and Alipay Ride Service. DiDi supports English interface registration for overseas visitors with international mobile numbers, and accepts Visa/Mastercard or Alipay for automatic settlement.

3. Separate dedicated waiting zones are designated for regular taxis and ride-hailing cars at Xi'an Xianyang International Airport (T1/T2/T3/T5) and all major railway stations (Xi'an Station, North Station, East Station, South Station). Do not wait for ride-hailing cars at regular taxi queues; follow on-site signage to the exclusive parking lot pick-up zones for online booked vehicles.

4. Most local taxi and ride-hailing drivers have limited English reading and speaking ability. To avoid miscommunication, prepare your destination written in Chinese characters on a note, or show the Chinese location page on your mobile map to the driver.

5. Always ask the driver for a printed trip receipt upon arrival. The receipt records license plate number, route and fare, which facilitates lost item retrieval or complaint filing for disputes. The unified municipal transport supervision hotline is +86-029-96716.

6. Temporary detours may be required due to downtown road maintenance, subway construction, or heavy traffic congestion. If you have a tight schedule for trains or flights, set off at least 30 minutes earlier as a buffer.

7. Standard taxis and regular ride-hailing sedans are not equipped with child safety seats. If traveling with infants or young children, remind the driver to maintain a steady, slow speed during the whole trip.





Nowadays, Xi'an metro line 1, line 2, line 3, line 4, line 5, line 6, line 8, line 9, line 10, line 14, line 15 and line 16 are in service, with a total length of about 441.67 kilometers.

Ticket Fare and Types

1. Single Journey Ticket: CNY 2 for the first 6km (4mi); CNY 3 for 6-10km (4-6mi); CNY 4 for 10-14km (6-9mi), CNY5 for 14-20km (9-12mi) and CNY6 for 20-26km (12-16mi). For the distance beyond 26km (16mi), extra CNY1 is needed for every 8km (5mi).

2. 10% discount could be enjoyed for passengers with a Public Transportation Card. Besides, passengers can also purchase metro tickets by using the Xi'an Metro APP, Alipay, WeChat Pay, and UnionPay.

3. Flat-rate Metro Pass: The pass with the value of CNY 50 only charges CNY 38 and the one with the value of CNY 100 charges CNY 68. Since the first use, it is valid for a year.

4. Xi'an Metro Pass: One-day Pass is sold at CNY 15 and Three-day Pass at CNY 40, allowing passengers to take all the city's metro lines without limit in 24 hours and 72 hours after the first use.

Note: 

1. Children under 4ft (1.3m) can take all subway lines for free.

2. One-day Pass & Three-day Pass are not required to be returned after use, so passengers can keep it as a souvenir.
