Guan Zhong

Guan Zhong (? -645 BC), whose given name was Yiwu, and courtesy name was Zhong, was born in Yingshang (today’s Yingshang County of Anhui) of the Qi State in the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC). He was an eminent statesman and thinker. He was appointed by Duke Huan of the Qi State as a minister and respectfully called “Father Zhong”.

During his tenure, Guan Zhong implemented various reforms in the State of Qi, making it the dominant force of the spring and Autumn Period. Guan Zhong's governing philosophy was further developed by scholars of the Warring States Period and compiled into the book Guanzi or Master Guan, which became an important work for studying agriculture and economy in pre-Qin period (before 221 BC).
