Zhu Yuanzhang

Zhu Yuanzhang (1328-1398), a native of Zhongli, Haozhou (today’s Fengyang County, Anhui Province), was the founding emperor of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).
During his reign, he emphasized the restoration and development of the economy, conducted a census, measured land, equalized land taxes, promoted irrigation, implemented military settlements, encouraged the cultivation of economic crops, and reduced the enslavement of craftsmen. He restrained powerful lords, stepped up the effort to fight against corruption and to strengthen the country's law. He attached great importance to education and revamped the traditional Confucian imperial examination system, from which potential state official were selected, based on merit and achievement.
The Criminal Law of the Ming Dynasty complied under Zhu Yuanzhang's direction was a representative code in the late feudal society of China. He abolished the Department of State Affairs and the positions of Chancellor, strengthening imperial authority and creating favorable conditions for the further development of the Ming Dynasty society, economy, and culture.
