O.P.

Hi,

I locked myself out of my laptops administrator account and can not remember the password nor the pass code. I tried the method with Util.exe and renaming it to cmd.exe. However, utilman.exe seems to be missing from the Windows System 32 folder to begin with.

How else can I reset the password?

Local Account or Windows Account?
Local account password when being setup should have asked you several security questions, a reset password link should be seen after entering the wrong password. Answer the listed security questions.

MS Account PW then browse to:
https://account.live.com/ResetPassword.aspx
Hope you have your ducks lined up.

Did you use Local account with no security questions eg Win11 Pro?
Or do you have Win11 Home and use one of the MS account bypass methods?

Thanks! I managed to reset the password using:
In the Command Prompt window, type notepad and hit Enter.
When Notepad opens, click File > Open.
In the "Files of type" dropdown at the bottom, select All Files.
Navigate to This PC > Local Disk (C:) > Windows > System32.
Find the file named utilman (or utilman.exe), right-click it, and rename it to utilman1.
Find the file named cmd (or cmd.exe), right-click it, and rename it to utilman.
Close Notepad and the Command Prompt window, then click Continue to boot to the normal login screen.
I was trying to search the X:\ drive which was the wrong location.

It helps to provide info to get the correct answer otherwise some here I suspect can't be bothered helping eg: It appears you were using a local account and set it up without any security questions.

Also your solution requires you to enter Win11 recovery mode, the default setting on new Win11 setups is the drive will be encrypted, Device Encryption (Home) or Bitlocker (Pro), that means people will have no access to the encrypted drive so no access to System 32 or utilman.exe.

Your solution only works when certain conditions are met, it helps to share some of those conditions so people don't have to write a book of every possible option including the possible recovery of a 48 digit bitlocker key or start asking questions that for some reason many of the OP's don't answer.

A future simple solution is to use a Password Manager so you can just open the app on your phone and find the PW/Pin number.
