Are you saying normally the low fuel light comes on at 600km when towing but now it's coming on at 400km when towing?

Cause and fix?

Well, the obvious question is, is the vehicle actually using more fuel than before (i.e. when you fill up how many litres does it take for those 400km and how does this compare to your 'usual' consumption).

Low fuel light appearing at 400km?
Where is the gauge when this happens? Same as usual (near empty?)

But at a guess, without any more info, it could be the transfer pump has failed.
How many k's on the car as if it's like a Prado, the transfer pump is a service item.

They have a couple of issues – 138 litres is the standard setup so removes the equation of any aftermarket tank issues (looking at you Brown Davis).

One issue is the standard wiring breaks down causing fluctuating readings and erroneous low fuel lights, but this is more erratic in nature rather than a constant issue like it seems you're experiencing.

Sounds like it's not transferring the fuel from the sub to main, they're a siphon setup and have a filter which can over time get blocked with debris that is naturally in fuel, so check that. Also if there is a small pin hole in the lines it'll cause issues (because siphon based setup). I'd be focusing on that area of transfer from sub to main.

Has l factory long range tank. Sub and main correct.
I'm told that there is a batton dividing tank.
One fill point.
Normally the low fuel light comes on at 600km when towing but now it's coming on at 400km when towing.
Appreciate the responses so far to pass on to the mechanic.

Anything else to check/review to determine cause and what to do to fix.

Does it do it when not towing?

It sounds like the sub is not transferring to the main as per prior comment. Curious why you need to be giving recommendations to the mechanic? Anyone experienced with 200 series knows these setups (it's the default setup) and it'd take them a day to check everything.

Yeh, and ever has it been so . . . this has been an issue ever since long range tanks have existed.

In the days when I used to make auxiliary tanks I flat out refused to fit any of transfer or two way valve setups . . . they were supplied with a manual or an electric pump that topped up the main tank as required.

Correction: Just a standard 138 litre OEM tank....not long range. Sorry for the wrong info.
Currently driving without caravan to get the low fuel light issue to appear again...
Mechanic awaiting an appointment time to book in.
