I am with telstra been there for fifteen continuously. Its a long story why.
I want to churn to either superloop or Tpg. but my problem is we have a voip home phone
and dont want to loose our number we are old and not mobile kind of people.
I have heard that if things dont go right in the port you can loose your number and it takes a very long
time to complete like a week or more. a bit scared about taking the plunge. we currently pay Telstra $113 a month
for the nbn 500 plus voip and iam thinking its not worth the hassle to save only $10 or so dollars a month.
looks like I am stuck with telstra forever.

Move your VoIP to a third party service. There's plenty and it doesn't risk losing the number. Once safely transported you can sign up to any plan online and be ported for data NBN almost instantly.

I am with iiNet; it is a TPG-owned company. I have a 500/50 internet plan plus VoIP. It costs us $99.99 per month—some people may say that's a lot of dough. We do not make many phone calls from the "house phone"; it is mainly for incoming calls.

We have been with iiNet for some years; before that we were with Internode and, before that, with Transact. All of those companies were absorbed under the TPG umbrella. We hardly ever contact iiNet; the service is reliable.

When transferring your existing VoIP service to another provider, make sure you are clearly understood when you say that you want to keep your existing phone number. Repeat the question if you have to. Then ask for a confirming email.

I agree with @pgdownload; however there will be some downtime. You could organise a VoIP service that's independent of your internet provider.

I do not know much about how to configure VoIP. In fact, when we went to NBN FTTP, iiNet provided us with a new modem that was pre-configured with the VoIP settings.

As I say, we pay $100 per month and there are cheaper plans around, I guess, if you want to look for them. If you're paying $113 now, even $13/month is a savings of $156 per year. Furthermore, most internet providers usually offer a discount for the first six months. In your first year, you could shave $250 off your annual spend. I understand about being fearful of "taking the plunge" but, let's look at this in perspective: it's only a phone, isn't it? It's not like something life-threatening.

i didnt know you can port your phone to another provider. If i want to churn then to TPG how to start a smooth move over

with no risk of loosing my number. what are examples of other voip providers. just googled and crazytel do this for $8 a month sounds ok so do i just sign up and let it change over in a few days or so but this wont affect my internet connection with telstra during this process.

I don't know from personal experience if you can obtain another VoIP service and retain your phone number. I would be guessing that the probability of doing this is reasonably good.

Instead of asking complete strangers here on Whirlpool—not that I have anything against the forum users here on Whirlpool—the proof of the pudding is in the eating.

There are dozens of VoIP providers in Australia. You can start here: /wiki/voip_providers

I can give you the "benefit" of my own experience (with iiNet), for what it's worth. The main thing to do is to prepare a list of questions and then make a couple of enquiries this morning to test the water.

From what you've written, your mandatory requirement is to retain your existing telephone number. Highly desirable is to save some money. I'm guessing that the "icing on the cake" is to obtain faster internet. I'm not recommending any particular internet or VoIP provider; I would be a mug to do that.

Yes, it's easily done (usually).

Ask over here /forum/125 and you will get some useful help from people with loads of experience with VOIP.

You sure can. Examples are Crazytel, Siptalk and Maxotel.

Maxotel is the best of the three, but also the most expensive. I always recommend them for a business.

Crazytel's new portal is not as user-friendly as the old one. They are also now charging for features that used to be free, such as voicemail, ring groups, SIP trunks, etc. I used to like Crazytel a lot, but after the recent changes, not so much.

Siptalk is a tried and tested VSP (voice or VoIP service provider) that has been around for a long time. John.M, the founder and manager, provides very good customer service. He is also active on Whirlpool in the Siptalk Customer Discussion thread.

Port your number to the VSP of your choice before you churn your internet connection. The port usually takes from a few days to a couple of weeks. It also pays to ensure Telstra isn't going to cancel your internet connection as soon as the number is being ported. Be careful about what you tell Telstra. If they misunderstand you, they may cancel your VoIP, causing you to lose your number.

Personally l use Crazytel. There suggest timeframe is Landline | CAT-A | from 7-10 Calendar Days | max 30 Calendar days |. It's not the most user friendly system but it is super cheap. Never cancel your landline until it has been transfer across. You can pick any provider people have previously listed. Depends on what functionality you want.

Port your landline to another provider. Ideally someone other than your internet ISP. Note the provider you are leaving may charge you a fee so you should double check if there is a fee.

Note l recommend getting an ATA and setting this up as per the instructions of your phone company. Some VoIP router don't have enough customisation options. I found when l jumped between different ISP the support for VoIP router wasn't the best. The register time on TP Link is 300 second but its recommend 30 seconds.
