"University of Melbourne ..... has taken out the top spot in the Financial Review Best Universities Ranking 2025. The University of Queensland is in equal second, after being number one for the past two years, with the University of NSW, and fellow Melbourne institution Monash University ranked fourth.

The rankings, presented by TechnologyOne, are scored on teaching and research, followed by career impact and equity .....

The Financial Review Best Universities Ranking is based on publicly available data from the federal government on equity, student satisfaction, research and career outcomes, as well as international information from the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), Times Higher Education (THE), QS World University Rankings (QS) and CWTS Leiden."

> Bond > Edith Cowan > Wollongong > Deakin > UQ/ANU
> Sth Aus > Adelaide/UTS > Flinders/Murdoch > UNSW/Macquarie/Griffith
> UMelb/Monash/CQU > Swinbourne > UWA/RMIT/Newcastle

So Sydney students should prefer Wollongong to UNSW/USyd,
Melb students should prefer Deakin to Monash/UMelb?

There is no simple or universally accepted way to rank teaching quality. Most of these ranking rely on student feedback as the primary measure which is particularly flawed (students are affected by personality, entertainment, how easy a course felt, rather than on actual learning effectiveness).

Students with ATAR of 50 to 70 join universities with lower entry requirements. Those with an ATAR below 50 may still gain admission through adjustment factors and other alternative entry pathways.

Easy, they teach degrees that are not available in higher ranked universities, such as primary school teaching and nursing.

Perversely, this sometimes leads to lower ranked universities outscoring higher ranked universities in graduate employment outcomes. Particularly, when lower ranked universities offer more courses accessible to part time students than higher ranked universities. By definition, a part time student in a full time job scores a 100% graduate employment outcome.

I don't see how UNSW with
93.8 , 92.9 , 89.5 , 95.7 , 87.7 => ended up with 82.8 Overal

Versus Curtin
92.8 , 89.4 , 86.5 , 94.7 , 83.8 => 88.3 Overall

Curtin every component is lower, yet Overall 5.5 pct-pt higher than UNSW.
(Several other unis are like that too so not a report typo).

I did think of that^ and it is indeed the case.

Still, even by separate survey questions, the response for Overall should more/less resemble what said for the five main components.

I've watched the Employer satisfaction list over the years, and I've seen times where the university that was #1 for graduate satisfaction one year the following year was #18 or #24.

I don't really put much stock in it, unless we all believe that the Australian Catholic University really is the university with the highest employer satisfaction.

ACU is known for teaching and nursing graduates. It's possible that some of the large employers of their graduates may be more easily pleased than elsewhere.

Well, it's good that these rankings do use "teaching" as one of the main criteria (although the assessment methodology may be less than idea).

One of the biggest issues with the usual university rankings that are published is that they are very, very heavily weighted towards research funding, collaboration and publications. Yet, of course, the *vast* majority of people who attend university only do so at the undergraduate level and thus have very little to do with research. Furthermore, increasingly, university teaching is being done by casual or part-time lecturers, rather than by the "serious" research academics. As a result, many students won't even be taught by the academics who are responsible for the university's high ranking, or will only have a single subject over the course of their degree taught by such an academic.

Research output at Australian universities has risen by 579 per cent since 2000, new analysis shows, raising concerns about the usefulness of the tidal wave of papers.

A quarter of papers produced in 2020 received three citations or reads in the following five years; half of Australian research from 2020 was cited only five times, or once a year, in the following five years, the research from University of Melbourne Professor Matthew Pinnuck shows.
