Could I have people's opinions (apart from competitors' spoofs!) about BankWest, including ease of getting savings out, etc. I refer particularly to the 'Hero' account, which seems to offer 4% for min deposit of $200 in any month and no withdrawals in that month.

I use BankWest, getting your savings out is the same as every other bank. Never had any dramas.

Used BankWest as my primary bank for a while and still have a Platinum Zero credit card for the no currency conversion fee feature.

Absolutely no problems with the bank itself (except maybe for the paucity of branches in Melbourne). Just moved on as found better products with other banks.

Worst bank, stay away. If you read around you will see alot of negative reviews. Stick to the ones recommended here ING or Ubank, they provide 4% savings too

I use a BW Platinum card for fee free foreign currency purchases. Having free extended warranty and international travel insurance is a nice bonus too. Never had any problems with BW.

I don't understand the savings accounts that heavily penalise savers if they do something outrageous like withdraw money from the account once a month. Bank West has the 'hero' saver. Rabo Direct has an account where you need to give the bank 90 days notice before withdrawing money.

Accounts like these belong somewhere in the 1980s. Both ING and UBank pay 4% with minimal conditions and no penalty for withdrawing your own money. Stick with them for your savings.

I'm with bankwest, far better than any of the others I've tried, and have great opening hours. Have 5 accounts with them currently and never had an issue. Easy to get credit cards, easy to get loan, easy to start a new account.

Been with bankwest since 99, no issues whatsoever. I have accounts with Commonwealth, NAB, & Me Bank. Much prefer Bankwest.

Not quite right about minimal conditions. I have used ING for about 10 years and I only had to save at least $200 per month to qualify for bonus interest, which was no problem. Then they arbitrarily changed it to $1000 per month plus must have an everyday account (which they claimed was "in response to customers' wishes" (!)), so that is no longer any good for me (the basic rate without bonus is 2.75% (useless)). Not concerned with credit cards. I have what I need there.

The everyday account is free, provides 2% cash back on all paywave purchases, and free ATM withdrawals for any amount at any ATM. Nothing beats that.

Yes, you need to deposit in $1k per month into the savings maximiser account to get 4% on your savings, but that's easy to do for anyone who has a job. Withdraw the money the next day if you wish and ING will still pay 4%.

The conditions are very minimal in my opinion. Silly stuff like Bank West's account where you touch the money once and get paid 0% is what people should avoid.

Wait what... I've seen the opposite, most comments I've seen love BankWest. Their phone app is among the best available and their online banking is clean and non-buggy, plus their opening hours are longer than most other banks if you do physical banking.

Never had issues with transferring money either. It's pretty standard for me to transfer from uBank or Westpac early in the morning and have it in my Bankwest account by the end of the day.

Personally I use a Bankwest transaction account + uBank ultra account for a more flexible savings account without penalties (I just throw the ultra card into a drawer and never use it), but if Bankwest made their Hero Saver account more flexible (eg – 1 withdrawal from savings per month without penalty), I'd swap from uBank in a heartbeat since I hate their buggy online banking.

I use Bankwest as a secondary account, pretty happy with them. I feel they have better products than most (including the Hero Saver). Most of my savings is in BW at the moment. I also have a Platinum CC with no forex, it's great as I don't have to use my Citibank Plus account (can't stand Sh!tibank).

I also have a Hero Transaction account which earns interest up to $5k, meaning I can keep more money in a transaction account and not loose out on interest. Being owned by Commbank means more ATMs than other banks as well. The only downer is the lack of branches and they tend to be understaffed but they do have longer trading hours.

OK. Interesting. I should add that at my location there are no BankWest branches or ATMs and are never likely to be. Also that I do not wish to use a smart phone. I do all my banking on-line from a (gasp) desk computer.

I have heard before that you can deposit $1000 per month with ING to get the 4% and withdraw it the next day. That seems silly and I bet they will change that. It used to be the case that you had to save $200 per month and make no withdrawals to qualify (which makes sense) so someone has clearly slipped up and no doubt they will simply change it as it becomes apparent that people will often 'abuse' the new system!

But until they change it, it is the better deal. Better than making a withdraw and getting nothing that month. Do that a couple times and you wont keep up with inflation let alone make money.

Just as an aside, Bankwest got bought out by CBA a number of years ago, as such you can use all CBA branches and ATMs.

I used to use bankwest a few years back when storing money in term deposits (back when interest rates were good!).

Found their processes archaic. While the staff weren't rude, everything just seemed to take way too long. I remember it once taking around 30-40 minutes to close a term deposit for me, compared to around 5 minutes from ANZ/BoQ.

Having said that, their product range is probably one of the most competitive out there – if the staff in the branch near you are reasonably competent, you could do well.
