Cloudflare Workflows - Human-in-the-Loop with waitForEvent


This template demonstrates how to build human-in-the-loop workflows using Cloudflare Workflows' waitForEvent API. It enables you to create durable, long-running workflows that can pause execution and wait for human input or external events before continuing.

Repository Structure


This is a mono-repository containing:

/nextjs-workflow-frontend: Next.js application for the frontend interface

/workflow: Cloudflare Workflow implementation


What is waitForEvent?


The waitForEvent API is a powerful feature of Cloudflare Workflows that allows you to:

Pause workflow execution indefinitely until a specific event is received

Create human-in-the-loop workflows where manual approval or input is required

Build event-driven applications that respond to external triggers

Implement complex approval chains and decision points in your workflows


Clone only the waitForEvent folder within the docs-examples repository



Clone the repository without checking out files:

git clone --filter=blob:none --no-checkout https://github.com/cloudflare/docs-examples.git cd docs-examples



Enable sparse checkout:

git sparse-checkout init --cone



Specify the folder you want:

git sparse-checkout set workflows/waitForEvent



Check out the branch (main):

git checkout main



Deployment



Workflow Deployment






If you use the Deploy to Cloudflare button, you only need to complete "Step 4: Apply database schema" replacing workflows-waitforevent-d1 with your database name if different. Deploying via the button will take care of creating the R2 bucket and empty D1 database.


Navigate to the workflow directory:

cd workflow



Create an R2 bucket, update wrangler.jsonc with the output from:

npx wrangler r2 bucket create workflow-demo-bucket



Create a D1 database, update wrangler.jsonc with the output from:

npx wrangler d1 create workflow-demo



Apply the database schema (run in the /workflow folder):

npx wrangler d1 execute workflows-waitforevent-d1 --remote --file=./db.sql



Deploy the workflow using Wrangler:

npm run deploy



Save the deployment URL we'll need that setting up the Next.js frontend.



Frontend Deployment






If you use the "Deploy to Cloudflare" button for the Next.js frontend it will create a new cloned repository on your GitHub account, you will need to clone the created repository and follow steps 4 and 5 to ensure the application functions correctly.


Clone this repository to your local machine if you have not already.



Navigate to the frontend directory:

cd nextjs-workflow-frontend



Install dependencies:

npm install



In your preferred editor open the \nextjs-workflow-frontend\app\constants.ts file and change the API_BASE_URL to the url of your deployed Workflow (No trailing / at the end).

export const API_BASE_URL = '<your-workflow-url-NO-TRAILING-SLASH>';



Deploy to Cloudflare:

npm run deploy



Find the deployment URL near the end of your npm run deploy terminal output. Play around with the app. If you have errors check for a trailing slash at the end of your API_BASE_URL in constants.ts or try a smaller sized picture.
