High-Level Political Forum

The High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) took place from Tuesday, 6 July, to Thursday, 15 July 2021, under the auspices of the Economic and Social Council. The forum included a three-day ministerial segment from Tuesday, 13 July, to Thursday, 15 July 2021, as part of ECOSOC’s High-Level Segment, which concluded on Friday, 16 July 2021. The theme for the 2021 HLPF was "Sustainable and resilient recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic that promotes the economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainable development: building an inclusive and effective path for the achievement of the 2030 Agenda in the context of the decade of action and delivery for sustainable development". The HLPF adopted the Ministerial Declaration as the outcome of its session.

Ministers and other participants were able to explore various aspects of the response to the COVID-19 pandemic and its impacts. They discussed policies and international cooperation that can control the pandemic and its impacts and put the world back on track to achieve the SDGs by 2030, within the decade of action and delivery for sustainable development.

In line with the integrated and interlinked nature of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the HLPF 2021 conducted in-depth reviews of the following goals: Goal 1: No poverty; Goal 2: Zero hunger; Goal 3: Good health and well-being; Goal 8: Decent work and economic growth; Goal 10: Reduced inequalities; Goal 12: Responsible consumption and production; Goal 13: Climate action; Goal 16: Peace, justice and strong institutions; and Goal17: Partnerships for the Goals.

Forty-two countries presented their Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs):

Afghanistan, Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Azerbaijan, Bahamas, Bhutan, Bolivia (Plurinational State of),Cabo Verde, Chad, China,Colombia, Cuba, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Denmark, Dominican Republic, Egypt, Germany, Guatemala, Indonesia, Iraq, Japan, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Madagascar, Malaysia, Marshall Islands, Mexico, Namibia, Nicaragua, Niger, Norway, Paraguay, Qatar, San Marino, Sierra Leone, Spain, Sweden, Thailand, Tunisia , Uruguay, Zimbabwe.

In addition to the main sessions, HLPF 2021 featured 276 Side Events, 17 VNR Labs, 7 Special Events, and 12 Exhibitions held on the margins of the forum, offering opportunities for deeper engagement and collaboration.

During the United Nations General Assembly high-level week in September 2023, Heads of State and Government will gather at the United Nations Headquarters in New York to review the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

SDG Summit 2019

The SDG Summit 2019 resulted in the adoption of the Political Declaration, “Gearing up for a decade of action and delivery for sustainable development”. World leaders called for a decade of action to deliver the SDGs by 2030 and announced actions they are taking to advance the agenda. The General Assembly endorsed the Political Declaration on 15 October 2019. More than 100 acceleration actions have been announced.

2018

This year’s forum, under the theme “Transformation towards sustainable and resilient societies,” concluded with the adoption of a Ministerial Declaration. Forty-six countries presented their Voluntary National Reviews on their efforts to achieve the 2030 Agenda.

2017

The meeting of the high-level political forum on sustainable development in 2017 convened under the auspices of the Economic and Social Council, was held from Monday, 10 July, to Wednesday, 19 July 2017; including the three-day ministerial meeting of the forum from Monday, 17 July, to Wednesday, 19 July 2017.

2016

HLPF in 2016 was the first since the adoption of the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs. The session included voluntary reviews of 22 countries and thematic reviews of progress on the Sustainable Development Goals, including cross-cutting issues, supported by reviews by the ECOSOC functional commissions and other inter-governmental bodies and forums.

2015

Many ideas also emerged on how the HLPF could organize its work after 2016, and deliver on its mandates to review SDGs progress; promote implementation of the post-2015 development agenda and conferences on SIDS and other special situation countries; address new and emerging issues and strengthen the science policy interface.

2014

The high-level political forum on sustainable development convened under the auspices of the Economic and Social Council met when the sustainable development goals and the options for a financing strategy for sustainable development were being formulated. The outcomes of those two processes are expected to form central elements of the post-2015 development agenda soon to be negotiated.

2013

The HLPF 2013 held its first meeting on Tuesday, 24 September 2013. The meeting was held under the auspices of the General Assembly and gathered Presidents, Prime Ministers, senior officials and representatives of stakeholders.
