The world is facing the worst ever health crisis since World War II, and Africa has not been spared. The coronavirus (COVID-19) has caused a global crisis affecting the core of human kind, impacting on social, economic, environment and related spheres - it is attacking societies indiscriminately.

About the Corona Virus

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Most people infected with the virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment. However, some will become seriously ill and require medical attention. Older people and those with underlying medical conditions like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, or cancer are more likely to develop serious illness. Anyone can get sick with COVID-19 and become seriously ill or die at any age. The virus can spread from an infected person’s mouth or nose in small liquid particles when they cough, sneeze, speak, sing or breathe. More . . .

Advice for the public

Leaving no one behind as the overarching principle, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3 aims at achieving universal health coverage, including access to quality essential healthcare services and access to safe, effective, quality, and affordable essential medicines and vaccines for all. No one is safe until everybody is safe. As the virus does not discriminate, responses cannot leave any one behind, including refugees and migrants. Access to vaccination is part of the human right to health.
