4654。在NASA/ESA<a 4654的运动速度极高，它在室女座星系团的热气体中撞出一条路来，前方的气体被压缩，后方的气体被拖拽，结果便形成了天文学家看到的那条长长气体尾巴。<br/><br/>到这里，一个简洁的假设好像就能解释一切：高速冲压把星系一边的气体往后拉，让它的形状走样。但麻烦在于，NGC 4654不止气体走样，它的恒星分布也走样了——这对一个螺旋星系来说就很反常了。冲压剥离本来只是“吹”走气体，它没那么大的力气去拨动已经成型的<a 4639。虽然今天看它们已经相隔甚远，但模型推演显示，大约5亿年前这对星系很可能有过一次擦肩而过的飞掠。在这种近距引力拉扯中，NGC 4639就像一只看不见的手，沿着NGC 4654的一侧把大量气体撕扯了出来。气体被抽走，新的恒星就失去了原料，那一侧的造星活动随之被抑制。换句话说，我们今天看到的恒星分布不均，根源可能不在当下，而是5亿年前那场<a 4654的歪斜需要两幕连续剧：第一幕是远古的飞掠，引力从一个方向抽走了半边气体，给不对称埋下了种子；第二幕是持续至今的高速穿行，星系团内介质用冲压把剩下的气体往反方向推，再把这种不对称刻画得更深、更夸张。两者不是二选一的关系，而是一前一后、一推一拉，联手塑形。意识到这一点之后，再回头看“它为什么是个中间型”的问题，答案就不再只是一个分类标签，而更像是一道包含着引力历史与流体力学过程的动力学方程。<br/><br/>按常理推断，一个星系如果经历了这么剧烈的气体剥离，造星活动往往会被打乱。许多冲压剥离的案例里，冷气体被拖走后便无法再坍缩形成新恒星，星系的老化速度会明显加快。NGC 4654却偏偏没有听话。哈勃的数据显示，它每年仍在诞生将近两个<a
