In FY 2024, Federal Science and Engineering Support for Higher Education Declined 4.3% from FY 2023; Federal Obligations to Nonprofits Totaled $11 Billion

In FY 2024, federal agency obligations to higher education institutions for support of science and engineering (S&E) activities totaled $46.9 billion—a decrease of 4.3% from FY 2023. Across all federal agencies, the Department of Health and Human Services was the largest funder of S&E support, contributing $27.9 billion, or 59.5% of the federal total.
