The CHC-Lab Geneva investigates health threats and impacts from traffic pollution and climate related heat stress. Studies are co-designed with the lab stakeholders. Innovative policy instruments and adaptation solutions are identified to effectively reduce health related climate threats.

Geneva is a medium-sized central-European city in western Switzerland. It is located in a topographic depression which is part of the Swiss Plateau. The ‘agglomeration’ of Great Geneva has ca. 1 million inhabitants (200’000 in the city of Geneva). Geneva has a temperate climate characterised by cool winters and relatively warm summer, with precipitation relatively well distributed throughout the year. Main climate hazards potentially dangerous for health include heat waves, exacerbated by severe traffic related air pollution and relative humidity in summer; increases in the magnitude and frequency of hot extremes (including tropical nights), and extreme precipitation and longer dry periods are expected until mid of this century. Geneva is the site of numerous international organisations and hence a centre of international diplomacy (including environmental diplomacy).

The objectives of the CHC Lab Geneva are 1) to analyze health related threats due to extreme heat and pollution on selected citizens including patients admitted to hospital with various heat related pathologies; 2) collect data and perform analysis of temperature, humidity, air pollution and demographic indicators; 3) co-design studies and tools to address climate health threats which are citizens centered; 4) assess existing health related adaptation policy and develop policy recommendations for public authorities. Members of the CHC Lab Geneva will include medical doctors, scientists, citizens, representatives of local NGOs, international organisations and public local authorities.

Geneva is a city in central Europe. Home to 200’000 inhabitants (and up to 1 million in Greater Geneva). The climate is temperate. Health related climate hazards include heat waves, severe thunderstorms and high humidity in summer. Pollution related traffic considerably enhance climate health threats.
