High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development
The High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) is the central United Nations platform for the follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The 2026 HLPF will be convened from Tuesday, 7 July, to Wednesday, 15 July 2026, under the auspices of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

Science, Technology and Innovation
Science, technology and innovation (STI) are essential for advancing the SDGs, enabling evidence-based decision-making, accelerating implementation, and scaling solutions to complex global challenges.

On 6-7 May 2026, the eleventh annual Multi-Stakeholder Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation for the SDGs (STI Forum) will take place at United Nations Headquarters in New York.

Global Sustainable Development Report
The Global Sustainable Development Report (GSDR) is a United Nations publication aiming to strengthen the science-policy interface, produced once every four years to inform the quadrennial SDG review deliberations.

The next report is scheduled for release in September 2027 ahead of the High-level Political Forum on sustainable development to be held under the auspices of the General Assembly (SDG Summit).

Sustainable Transport
While there is no single dedicated Sustainable Development Goal for transport, it is reflected in several SDG targets and recognized as an enabler for achieving many of the goals.

The United Nations Decade of Sustainable Transport will be an opportunity to further raise awareness of transport’s crucial role in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals and to gather and rally new solutions, resources and partnerships to advance sustainable transport globally.

Water
Water is fundamental to sustainable development, underpinning health, food security, energy, ecosystems, and economic growth. Ensuring universal access to safe drinking water and sanitation, improving water quality, strengthening water management, and enhancing resilience to water-related risks are essential for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and addressing climate change impacts.

The 2026 UN Water Conference will take place from 2–4 December 2026 in the United Arab Emirates. Co-hosted by Senegal and the United Arab Emirates, the Conference aims to accelerate the implementation of SDG 6 on clean water and sanitation, strengthen global water governance, and further elevate water-related issues on the international agenda through concrete action and partnerships.

Oceans
SDG 14: Life Below Water aims to conserve and sustainably use the world's oceans, seas, and marine resources by 2030. Key targets include reducing marine pollution, protecting ecosystems, ending overfishing, and minimizing ocean acidification. It is critical for managing climate change, biodiversity, and coastal livelihoods.

Small Island Developing States
Small Island Developing States (SIDS) face unique and interrelated challenges, including climate change impacts, ocean degradation, limited resources, and structural vulnerabilities, while also demonstrating leadership and innovation in advancing sustainable development. Strengthening partnerships, mobilizing finance, and enhancing capacity-building are essential to support SIDS in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and ensuring that no one is left behind.

The Fourth International Conference on Small Island Developing States marked a key milestone in advancing SIDS priorities and resulted in the adoption of the Antigua and Barbuda Agenda for SIDS, which provides a renewed framework for action, partnerships, and implementation.

Stakeholder Engagement
Stakeholder engagement is central to advancing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) serves as the United Nations’ main platform for inclusive dialogue, bringing together governments, civil society, the private sector, academia, and other stakeholders to share experiences, build partnerships, and strengthen implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Partnerships for the SDGs
Partnerships are critical for accelerating progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals by bringing together governments, civil society, the private sector, academia, and the UN system. Effective multi-stakeholder partnerships help mobilize resources, scale innovative solutions, and strengthen implementation across sectors and levels.

Capacity Development
Capacity development is essential for advancing sustainable development, enabling governments and stakeholders to strengthen skills, institutions, data systems, and partnerships needed to design, implement, and monitor integrated solutions across the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of the 2030 Agenda.

The Division’s capacity development activities advance the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the ABAS and other internationally agreed development goals, guided by the outcomes of United Nations intergovernmental bodies on the three pillars of sustainable development – social, economic and environmental.

Higher Education for Sustainable Development
Higher education plays a critical role in advancing sustainable development by generating knowledge, educating future leaders, fostering innovation, supporting evidence-informed policymaking, and working with communities, governments, civil society, business and the UN system to translate ideas into action.

UN DESA supports the Higher Education Sustainability Initiative (HESI) as a platform that mobilizes higher education institutions, networks, students and partners to advance sustainable development.

SDG Registries & Databases
Over the years, UN DESA has developed and maintained a range of SDG registries and databases that capture commitments, partnerships, and actions by governments, the United Nations system, and a wide range of stakeholders. These platforms support transparency, accountability, and knowledge-sharing, and help track progress and implementation across the 2030 Agenda.

Together, these registries bring together thousands of entries originating from major UN conferences, intergovernmental processes, and country-led efforts. They provide publicly accessible information on voluntary commitments, national reviews, UN system initiatives, and partnership activities at global, regional, and national levels.
