West Africa Regional Workshop on the Implementation of the International Merchandise Trade Statistics: Concepts and Definitions 2026 (IMTS 2026)
Abuja, Nigeria 21 - 24 July 2026

The workshop aims to support countries in the West Africa in implementing the IMTS 2026 by enhancing capacity for national statistical offices and relevant agencies. The workshop will present the updates and new topics of the IMTS 2026, provide practical strategies for data compilation and dissemination, and exchange country practices in compiling international merchandise trade statistics.

The Handbook on Integrating Business and Trade Statistics (HIBTS), endorsed by the United Nations Statistical Commission in 2025, supports National Statistical Offices in linking business and trade data through a self-paced, six-lesson e-learning course developed by UNSD and UNITAR, aimed at enhancing skills for producing integrated, policy-relevant statistics, with lessons covering policy drivers, frameworks, data quality, methods, confidentiality, and innovation.

Training on the use of Trade Data Tools (TDT)
Hosted by Statistics Guyana and the CARICOM Secretariat 9 December – 12 December 2025

TDT is intended to compile IMTS that are generated from administrative sources such as customs declarations, aircraft/ship registers, and ministry records. The existing data tools, like Eurotrace and PC Trade, process and verify raw data. However, as technology evolves, Eurostat and UNSD are working on developing a new generation tool, named Trade Data Tools (TDT), that will be ready for testing at the end of 2025.

E-Learning Course on Statistics of International Trade in Services
Virtual 15 September – 26 October 2025

Main goals of the course are to enhance the capacity of trade statisticians to apply the most recent internationally agreed recommendations as contained in the Manual on Statistics of International Trade in Services 2010 (MSITS 2010); to define best possible data sources; to set up or enforce collection systems; and to strengthen statistical production processes.

Methodology

The Trade Statistics Branch of the United Nations Statistics Division is responsible for the development and maintenance of the methodological guidelines on International Merchandise Trade Statistics (IMTS), SITS (Statistics of International Trade in Services), Tourism Statistics, Distributive Trade Statistics (DTS) and Basic Economic Statistics including Statistical Business Register (BES). Furthermore, it manages and maintains related international classifications including the Standard International Trade Classification (SITC), Broad Economic Categories (BEC) and their related correspondence tables. As part of this work several surveys of national practices in various topics have been conducted.

Data

UNSD collects, compiles and disseminates detailed trade data (by commodity/services category and by trading partner) for both merchandise trade and trade in services. UN Comtrade and UN ServiceTrade, data dissemination system, offer free-access to official trade statistics as reported by countries/areas. To reduce reporting burden, data collection activities are coordinated through the Inter-Agency Task Force on International Trade Statistics by ensuring that there is no duplication in data request and collected data are shared among its members. Both UN Comtrade and UN ServiceTrade provide not only fully flexible query and strong data extraction capabilities but also essential data analysis features.

Capacity Building

The Trade Statistics Branch of the United Nations Statistics Division is active in technical cooperation, in collaboration with other international organizations, with many data compilers from central banks, national statistical offices, customs administrations and other relevant agencies around the world through seminars/workshops and country projects. Regional workshops normally focus on compilation guidance and explanation of international recommendations.

- Task Team on International Trade Statistics

The Task Team on International Trade Statistics (TT-ITS) under the UN Committee of Experts on Business and Trade Statistics (UNCEBTS) aims to provide the strategic vision, direction and coordination for the methodological development and implementation of the recommendations on international trade statistics in national, regional and international statistical systems; revise and update the recommendations on the compilation of international trade statistics and other methodological documents on international trade statistics; promote the development of databases on international trade statistics; promote the implementation of the recommendations on the compilations of international trade statistics, including e-learning training programmes on international trade statistics; and promote the use of international trade statistics in policy formulation.

- Friend of the Chair Group on International Trade and Economic Globalization

Friend of the Chair Group on International Trade and Economic Globalization was created by UN Statistical Commission in 2013 (Decision 44/106 in E/2013/24) to prepare a concept paper on the scope and content of the framework for measuring economic globalization and coordinating the various international working groups.

International Merchandise Trade Statistics: Concepts and Definitions 2010 (IMTS2010) is intended to provide recommendations that are globally applicable and operational. The conceptual framework of IMTS 2010 reflects both the multipurpose nature of these statistics and concern for availability of the adequate data sources and data-compilation procedures. IMTS 2010 follows an integrated approach to economic statistics, including the use, as applicable,of common concepts, definitions, classifications and data-compilation strategies.

The Manual on Statistics of International Trade in Services 2010 (MSITS 2010) addresses the needs of a variety of producers and users of such statistics. While it is primarily a guide for statistical compilers, it is also a useful tool for governments and international organizations that use statistical information in connection with international negotiations on trade in services. Furthermore, it can aid enterprises and others that need to monitor developments in international services markets.

Compilers Guide for the Manual on International Trade in Services 2010

The Compilers Guide serves the purpose of harmonizing and improving the ways in which statisticians at the national level collect, compile and disseminate trade in services statistics. The Guide provides the international statistical community with guidelines, best practices, case studies, and practical advice on the compilation of the trade in services statistics.

The Trade Statistics Section (TSS) of the Economic Statistics Branch of UNSD is responsible for International Merchandise Trade Statistics (IMTS) and Statistics of International Trade in Services (SITS).
