TransLink and the Queensland Government are giving away up to 400 000 free go cards, loaded with $10 travel credit to those who do not already have go cards.

If you don't already have one please do. Even if you don't travel on public transpor now you might in the future and it slows the service down even more than now if there are people buying a paper ticket.

Yes, because they hiked the paper ticket fares by a metric ton at the start of the year.

I wouldn't mind so much but the equipment is crap. The readers are illegible in bright sunlight and/or high humidity. So no problem there for Queensland then! *rolls eyes*

The only time they're really clear is after dark (provided it's not humid!). The problem is that people peering at them to try and figure out how much they have left, or what the error message is if they get a bad beep, slows the whole queue down.

Also the gates at the main line stations stay open far too long. The number of people getting off without paying is huge.

Oh! And the stupid top-up machines. The credit card pinpad is so low down I have to stoop to read it. How old people are supposed to manage I don't know. Translink must think we're all in wheelchairs or three feet tall which is strange because I only see one wheelchair user regularly on my line, and no midgets (unless you count junior humans).

Sorry, I have a lot of pent-up rage over the Go Card system and trains generally :)

Which readers? The ones on the train station gates? The non-gate pillar ones at train stations? The ones on the buses and ferries?

Only time I've had issues with sunlight washing out a display is on the Go Card TVMs. Get the sun at the wrong angle and the monitor is unreadable.

I put $100 on at a time – not going to go and get cash out of the bank just to top up my go card. And given that they can't design/order proper equipment, I'm certainly not trusting them with my personal details or credit card information. They probably store it in an Access database...

I don't see why the pinpad is so low anyway – the touch screen that you have to use to top up is much higher up, so I assume they've established that it's reachable by wheelchair users. The pinpad should be beside it on the right, at the same height.

Just don't forget to swipe on and off at every leg of the journey or you may end up paying double. I forgot to swipe off on the second leg of a ferry trip the other day and was charged $1.22 for the first leg then $1.50 for the second leg, for neglecting to swipe.

I'd assumed I'd be charged $1.50 for the whole journey, versus the usual $1.22, for missing a swipe but it turned out a little dearer than that.

Noticed that I was being charged extra (double) if a two leg journey finished after midnight so I rang them and asked if the system reset at midnight (unlike paper tickets such as a daily, which can be used until the last service). No, they said, must be a glitch in the system, we'll refund you. Three months later, I'm still waiting.

Despite a few gripes I still prefer the go cards to paper tickets.

In my opinion, the paper ticket system was far inferior to the previous electronic tickets the buses had. With the paper tickets, it took much longer for a group of passengers to board the bus. It gave the driver much more work to do (checking tickets), and many drivers did not bother to do this thoroughly, making it much easier to evade fares.

I totally agree – I prefer boarding prepaid only buses nowadays, because there is always the one person who doesn't know where they're going/doesn't know how much their ticket costs who holds up the entire bus.

Bring on full paper ticket removal, I say!

Go Card is south east Queensland only. No idea if the upcoming promo will be address checked or not though.
Pre-loaded Go Cards are available at the station office at QR Citytrain stations, and also from some Go Card TVMs.

I already own an unregistered one, so will happily accept another card from the incompetent government in QLD.

The <no> go card is so poorly implemented it's not funny. The vendor they used (cubic) has systems around the world, yet still managed to stuff up the implementation. A lot of the blame is squarely on the shoulders of Translink as they didn't want to mess with the Zonal system in use in QLD. But eventually decided to make some changes to help with the implementation.

Looking forward to using it again when I'm back in Bris – less than a week away now. Hopefully they've fixed some of the serious bugs with the system, but judging comments from friends and various places I've seen the system is just as borked as usual.

BTW – I know some people will knock my comments. Enjoy. I've used integrated transport systems in *many* cities around the world, and there are very few that are as stuffed as the Brisbane one. My personal "stuffed" favourite goes to Belfast, who issues different smart cards depending on which zones you want to purchase day trips to.

Without getting too deep into things I haven't had any trouble with Go card in about a year maybe and that was my own fault.

I use it regularly too but mostly bus services and occasionally trains.

I find it easy to use and top up.

Though it is poor compared to some countries at least it is sound.

I don't catch the trains often but since they had the go card I haven't seen any ticket checkers? or have I just been lucky? Are there less now and how do they check you've paid if you have a go card?

Transit police come onto services with go card checkers to see if you have touched on.

They also check concession ID cards for students and sometimes passports.

I've seen someone taken off a service and authorities called.

The services I regularly see TTOs on are ones on the Gold Coast line.
As others have said, they use a handheld Go Card scanner that lets them know when and where you touched on at.

Also, be careful you don't get caught one swipe behind. I managed to cop 3 fines in a row (Yeah, should have realised I know, but I had headphones on and I wasn't really paying attention) by neglecting to swipe off once. The next time I swiped on I got a $5 fine – which apparently counted as a check only, then I swiped off (which apparently was a swipe on) at my destination, and repeated the process for 3 days in a row before I realised that my credit was getting low. Grrr.....
