I flew from Melbourne on Wednesday midnight with Thai Airways, arriving in Bangkok at 5.30AM. Immigration took about 1 hour. That took 3 hours from landing to check-in at hotel. Lol.

3 HOURS ??!! remember... TAXI next time... especially at THAT TIME of the day... and it would have cost about $20

Second Day, Then we went to Platinum Mall. We had a good 1.5 hours in Platinum Mall, but it wasn’t enough and we knew we have to come back to shop more! We had dinner then just hit the bar in our Landmark hotel. That’s Day 2.

What did you find at Platinum ..... gosh.. I could barely stay there... full of small women's clothes – obviously 'not' for me.

Absolute BS that they didn't know the Landmark Hotel lol. It's one of the biggest and most famous hotels centrally located in the city. It could have been an accent thing though, most of the time Thai taxi drivers can't understand Western names for places unless you say the name in a Thai accent rather than just your own normal Western-accented English.

E.g. One of the Central malls, such as Centralworld, would be pronounced like "Sen-tun-Worl" in Thai, Central Pinklao = "Sen-tun Pin-gao" etc.

Makassan and taxis. It's a very congested area and taxis probably did not want to go from there to Landmark to sit in horrible traffic during peak hour, so a taxi from the airport direct to your hotel would have been the best option.

MRT to Sukhumvit and Skytrain to Phloen Chit is maybe a quicker way from Makassan but with bags and packed trains no fun at all. At the time of the day you were travelling there really isn't any quick option. The way you ended up going was probably not much worse than the other options once you decided against getting a taxi from the airport.

Astroboy23 said he spent HOURS there.... I walked up a few of the aisles... and thought... what the HELL could a stocky aussie guy buy there... and the result was 'zilch'. The Platinum Mall – and the few stores in that area are really a haven for 'asian women'. Then again.. it is Thailand (granted I found MBK to be crap for me as well)

Yes immigration alone took 1 hour. and because it was peak hour that time, and I was thinking not to get taxi. so get ARL which is ok, until 1 or 2 stops after airport, full with commuters. But when I came back to Makassan for Phaya Thai and change to BTS to Nana Station, it was quiet already. Cause locals mostly got out at Makassan. and for BTS, most people got out at Siam.
When my friend arrived at 11am, I told 4 of them to take taxi straight away, took them almost 1 hour as well.

What did you find at Platinum
Honestly, there's nothing to buy for me haha. My friends like it though, they bought lots of hats and engrave their own initial. One of my friends only bring 4 clothes. and on the first day alone we change clothes 4 times, because of the heat and rain. So he shopped a lot, just buy cheap stuff to wear there. We did bought couple of t-shirt for 200baht. And I bought some 'Supreme' t-shirt for 450baht. lol

I didn't, I really wanted to go to Central World for Yenly Yours Cafe though. We only went to Siam Paragaon, Discovery and Central

I did buy some for my girlfriend, cheap and a good souvenir for her. There's 1 doll that I found on lv 5, a Japanese store called Moshi Moshi. 2 weeks ago I saw the same doll in Melbourne Bourke St, selling for $60. I got it for 180 baht, around $6.5. ^^ thats how cheap it is in Platinum.
I really like the shopping mall in Bangkok though like Siam PAragon, etc. They are high-end shopping malls, it's just we were not planning to buy expensive stuff, as we went there for bachelors party.
Initially, I wanted to go new shopping mall caled EmQuartier on the first day, but all my friends were too tired.

The room is very good. It's a 5 star hotel. The most interesting part is the glass windows between the bathroom and the bed. It's a clear glass, with a press of a button, the glass freeze so it's not clear anymore. Location is 15 steps away from Nana BTS Station.
Now everything depends on who you go with. There are lots of family that stay here. But personally, if I come with my family, I wouldn't stay here. The location is located in Red Light District. Lots of 'Massage' and 'Bar' around the hotel. Nana Plaza is 5 minutes away walking and Soi Cowboy is 10 minutes away walking.
If you're going with your mates like us, this hotel is perfect for us.
I also find there are lots of single traveller businessman or expat, who wants to enjoy the surroundings.
Also the hotel is 'guest friendly', you will see girls walking in and out the hotel.
If you're a family, the hotel can be fault, it's just you could choose better environment.
I might stay in Siam area if I come with my family next time, easy access to shopping area.
If I come for party, then this is the place where you want to be.

I really want to come back though, only on the last day I found good places to 'hang out', looking for tickets during Melbourne cup this morning. $700 Thai Airways return. Might not have enough leave though :(

I've sat on the nice outdoor terrace before and had drinks. The cocktails are pretty good there and not too expensive. There's also a buy-1-get-1-free cocktail special from 3 – 9 p.m. everyday that makes it even better value!

I avoid Makkasan, it's a big white elephant for tourists in my opinion

Taxis can be non-existent (people want to go only to local hotels and the drivers avoid it)

The other option is going to Phetchaburi MRT station, which is a 400m walk with no Aircon, then you need to buy a ticket and the queues can be horrendous, far worse than the Phaya Thai BTS station. And even then once you get to Sukhumwit you will still need to maybe walk BTS or taxi to your hotel.

Much easier just to stay on until Phaya Thai, quick transfer to BTS (there are both escalators and lifts) which puts you directly on the Sukhumwit line for Siam, Ploenchit, Chidlom, Nana, Asoke etc where the majority of hotels would be

Here's something that surprised me . Went to the toilet at Phuket Airport and Bangkok Airport and women in there cleaning . I think it must be a common thing there because no one batted an eyelid . Standing at the urinal while they are busy scrubbing between the tiles on the floor

Happens all the time everywhere in Thailand. It's extremely rare to have male cleaners actually, you get female cleaners casually walking around doing their jobs in male toilets all the time. You get katoey cleaners some time as well! That could be awkward for some...

I bet there's laws against having the opposite sex working in them in Australia, privacy laws and so on. Thailand as usual just goes about their business without a care.

There is the Novotel at the airport itself, tends to be a bit expensive compared to the downtown hotels. It’s right above the train station at the airport.

Ta but I'm thinking of hotel van to hotel from airport upon arrival – a hotel a couple of kays away.
This is for my wife who doesn't feel safe in Bangkok taxis should she get one from hotel to railway station (so she can get the train to the Oz embassy).
She's a Thai and has reason to be not keen on taxis in BKK.

Novotel is indeed expensive.

Apparently in Japan. Female cleaners clean the public bath houses change rooms of the men's one
