NBN is doing a trial of upgrading MDUs from NBN FTTN to FTTP and NBN FTTC to FTTP.

To participate in this trial, you’ll need your body corporate to flag your interest via the form below. We will then conduct a building survey, which will determine whether your building is eligible to upgrade from FTTN/FTTC to FTTP.

The cost for the trial is $250 per premises for a standard installation, which includes all cabling activities from the street network into the premises for ‘simple’ buildings. This fee is payable by the Body Corporate. It is part of our network investment plan for nbn to contribute toward the cost of the fibre activities. Please note, this may not cover all costs if your building is more complex than a standard build. For more complex builds, including commercial or heritage buildings, an additional contribution may be required via your authorised representative. These additional costs for ‘complex’ buildings will not be known until a site visit has been performed by one of our delivery partners.

While both technologies can be active, new orders can only be supported on the FTTP service. If you do order a new plan, make sure that you speak to your provider about cancelling the previous plan to ensure you’re not paying for both.

That page says, under Common Questions...
"Will tenants need to buy a new modem?"
"Most nbn compatible modems will work across different technologies. To check the compatibility of existing modems with nbn FTTP, please ask tenants to contact their preferred provider. Providers may charge tenants for a compatible modem."

Shouldn't they be speaking about routers not modems?

They have both a xDSL input and an Ethernet WAN port.

Thanks for this post! I shot through an email to my Strata detailing what's happening with FTTN to FTTP upgrades around Australia and that due to many faults having to be lodged with our current FTTN how this would benefit everyone (small group of single story villas as opposed to an apartment building etc)

Thank you for your note but I am currently unable to open the links as I am having some work done on my computer.
I am not sure how we can assist yourself as I understand that you would normally go to your provider

Thankfully besides multiple dropout and speed faults throughout the years we hit 100/40mbps when everything is working correctly on FTTN, but not sure there's much hope for this lil complex in Morley, WA

Our Strata Manager lodged ours this morning. Ref number is in the 2800's. I wonder if this ref number series is just for this trial? Quite popular on a few days in!

Does anybody have any information re: non-body corporate sites? The sort of sites that might just have a shared driveway with 3 self contained units? Everyone left, right and over the road from this location can order FTTC to FTTP upgrades for coming up on 10 months or so now, but no news for this particular situation.

Any info anyone might have found be great!

**edit/update: there is a telstra pit right in the driveway. Can’t recall if there is a FTTC dpu in the pit.

So you dont have an external body corporate manager, but I presume you have a Strata scheme for the common assets – driveway etc?

If this is the case there is nothing stopping you registering and just register it under the name of chair of the last AGM (or yourself if only 3 of you – NBN wont know/care).

Got a response back from the lovely chap sending out initial confirmation/rejection notices. An MDU config such as mine (3x unit/townhouse with a shared driveway) are considered a 'Simplex' configuration (as opposed to Complex), and hopefully will be exposed post August-2023 for upgrade eligibility.

It's a shame, because my 'Simplex' was built to NBN spec in 2014. We have a shared conduit down the driveway which houses our current copper runs (FttC). This splits into 3 separate lead-in conduits via an intermediary Telstra pit. Couldn't be any easier to run 10-15m of fibre.

I am in the same situation – Having reside on a private road with 4 others single dwelling houses, no common title. While the main road facing houses 2 doors away are all now eligible for FTTP upgrade, mine isn't.

How's your hunting milage going so far?

My residential property is also in a similar situation,

We have a bodycorp in place for our 12 houses laneway but only to manage the shared areas (driveway etc) each property is individually titled and we are essentially now in a island where all neighbouring properties / streets can upgrade.

Just providing an update if anyone is interested.
Got back from NBN – because I am a single dwelling, not eligible for the MDU upgrade program. However, when I contacted NBN via Twitter a few days ago, I was told my property is on HMDU (Horizontal MDU). Looks like this is a dead end.

Sounds like it might be that 'simplex' MDU configuration, instead of Complex — which is what they're seemingly trialing. ~August 2023 onwards for Simplex activations, supposedly.

A very surprised update today – rocked up this morning, my address is now FTTP_SA. Woohoo!!! Signing up for the FTTP upgrade right now!

Turns out a very kind NBN gentlemen (from this NBN MDU Upgrade Trail program, who came back to me earlier to advise I am not eligible for the MDU upgrade) did some review on their system. As we although being on a private road, all have individual lead-ins. The system has now been updated to reflect that, so we are now eligible for the free FTTP upgrade now.

Sorry I should've been clearer, I can put an order through the normal FTTP upgrade process in August. The two properties have seperate lead ins but a shared driveway

So I'm in a biggish MDU area. Live in an MDU of 12 townhouses myself. Lots of the area of single dwellings now have FTTP available. Any multiple dwelling around the area according to Launtel says upgrade unavailable. Now the TCP quote system says they are only quoting simple dwellings and TCP quote is same price as before. Tried registering for MDU trial (ticket number 3700+) but got rejected from this too. So.... What do MDU's do in order to promote an upgrade?? I just want better than 26 FTTN download? Any thoughts WP for a free upgrade?
