Hi all, looking for advice on controlling our ducted AC – used for heating and cooling.

Essential – ability to turn on/off
Ideal – turn on/off 'sleep' mode
Bonus – control temp/fan/mode

The rub here is that our systems seem to be at the cheaper end and not compatible with out of the box solutions. We have 2 on separate controllers for the 2 floors of our townhouse. Temperzone branded. I recall looking a while back and it didn't seem to be compatible with the modern smart home controllers.

I'm thinking of potentially using a switchbot on the power button, or alternatively whether an ESP/similar may be able to toggle an input/circuit?
We've recently upgraded the solar from (another) cheap/old option from the prior owners, and now have live monitoring, so we're better able to manage our load. Given the space, we only have 5kW of generation, and the heater can easily pull 2-3kW when cycling. We work a split of WFH and office, so it would be handy to be able to better manage via HA automation or simple control. When I'm WFH and able to, I look periodically and use the finger method to manage this but even then can be caught in meetings and unable to take advantage of patchy Melbourne weather

Are you certain?
A very quick look at the wiring diagram for this Temperzone Thermostat https://dstal.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/TZT-100InstallerManualv1.pdf, if the others are the same/similar an Ecobee would be a suitable drop-in replacement.

Give Temperzone a call and see if your controller can be upgraded to their iZone Nexus smart controller which apparently supports Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Apple Home Kit and IFTTT.

If its not supported, then you'll have to do your own research to find out if a 3rd party off the shelf smart thermostat (e.g: Nest, Ecobee ) can be made to work. But from what I found out while I upgraded my controller, most Australian manufacturers use proprietary control signals unlike Americans, therefore those off the shelf controllers may not work.

Yikes, so essentially you identified the (laymans) – 'button inputs', and the relays are just closing those circuits in place of the buttons? Similar to something I've done elsewhere with a shelly.

I had the AC guys out today to do a service, partly also a 'tell me what condition our units are in'. Service mostly good, with 1 relay/switch no good on the upstairs unit – temp fix in place. Major hurdle for determining alternate controller is that he couldn't locate the internal unit. It's quite a skinny roofspace. I've had another look and realised where I thought it was, is wrong. Up in the roof over the weekend to search. The AC guy is going to consult his experts based on the controller and external units, and come back to me next week.

Thanks for sharing this example above. A more complete version of what I was contemplating with an ESP to on/off

Depending on the unit you might be able to find a neater option that can communicate directly with the board through spi protocol, usually the Japanese one are very easy to integrate if you look hard enough on github

Thought I would come back to update, for any other poor soul like I was, searching for solutions for the Temperzone units. I bit the bullet and coughed up for a sensibo unit. It arrived during the week, and it seems to work. The only issue I've had is the power status can become 'out of sync', but fixed in the app. So the SAT-2 IR is functional.
I'd spoken to Temperzone and the guy there believed they never made a remote for the unit, and didn't have any codes or info to share.

So my next task will be trying to learn all the codes on the Broadlink RM3, so I can then deploy that on the other unit, rather than another hundred bucks on sensibo. Would be easier if I could just access the data Sensibo has

I've also deployed in Home assistant, which was auto-discovered and setup fairly easily once I followed instructions for an API Key. If I can get the broadlink solution working, I'll be getting another one and bringing this all to local control.

I'm in the same boat as you downwind.

Have been wanting to smart up my Temperzone for years, They seem to have NFI about their own products. I have managed to get my Logitech Harmony to sporadically control the Sat-2. How is the Sensibo going for you?

I have been working on this for years and can now answer the OP's original question using IR. :)

You will need an IR generator for these, and I have purchased a Sensibo Air to try them with HomeKit.

The reverse-engineered Temperzone SAT-2 IR commands are:

I also have the TZT-100 and would like to control it remotely.

One thing I noticed was the T-T inputs on the PCB, the installer manual on page 11 says if you set TT=oF "A closed contact on the TT terminals will switch the TZT-100 On or OFF."

Maybe an ESP32 wifi board could switch this circuit to give some form of rudimentary on/off control?

I spoke with the place that makes the TZT-100 thermostat and they said they will have a drop in replacement around the end of the year with WiFi and tuya access, so I will probably just go with that one once its available.

I tried to get Temperzone to sell me a remote but couldn't get their attention despite multiple attempts! But thanks to @StephenBrammer sharing the IR codes, I was able to pull together an ESP32 with an IR transmitter to control the SAT-2 thermostat. Here is the snippet of an ESPHome config for anyone looking to do the same.

I ended up giving up waiting and ordering a different thermostat in March (Halo), but at least now they have put the new product on their page.
