Nice graph here showing the accelerating DC charger rollout. 93 EV fast-charging sites have been commissioned in the first six months of this year, which is almost as many as in the whole of 2021.

Most of those Sydney shopping centres already have EV charging spaces. I wonder if these are in addition to or are just replacements.

EVX are adding off-peak pricing for their Polecharger in Glebe from July 1 – https://evx.tech/off-peak-pricing/

Under the new pricing schedule, the rates for charging your vehicle will be adjusted as follows:
From 8pm to 8am: $0.39/kWh
From 8am to 8pm: $0.50/kWh

Weird that their peak rates run through the middle of the day. It suggests the pricing is driven by demand for the product rather than the underlying cost of energy supply.

good to see the ev charger roll out is nearing completion for the yarra ranges, this covers quite a section of the community and also what is a section of vic thats quite popular for the tourists... will make these areas more open for evs...

We have EV chargers in our workplace now, and we have employees with electric or PHEV vehicles. Supercheap auto, local shopping centres, some petrol stations, random dedicated chargers near me etc have them, among many other places in Sydney.

I've even thought about installing a few faster public chargers along my property, so many locals have them but didn't spend the 25k on a faster charger. They could simply drop the car off and walk home to pick it up later.

I want to see greater adoption of EVs and PHEVs but it is still a bit inconvenient to charge them quickly when you need them.

I agree. Its about increasing the utilisation of the charger, not about their costs for electricity.

The UK is now mandating contactless payments on chargers

Contactless payments. All chargers over 8kW (ie, not slow chargers/lamppost chargers) will have to have contactless payments within a year. No more fiddling about with apps or struggling with unusual systems. Tap and go!

Fingers crossed this expands elsewhere (like, down under) – since it's a requirement of government funding in some programs in Australia, hopefully it'll just be easier to at least fit *all* chargers going forward, if not retrofitting exist chargers, with contactless terminals.

Plug into our new charging points with PlugShare

Customers can now see the plug type, live status and the pricing of our chargers in real time when looking for bp pulse locations.

Every new charger commissioned by bp will be automatically listed on PlugShare, with real time data and check-in points.

They had only increased the cost for 50 kw chargers from 40 to 45c per kwh earlier in the year.
So in 6 mths it's gone up from 40c to 50c per kwh. That's 25%.

Unless your running solar :) ... what is really needed is government mandates, I don't think the $70m provided by the Federal Government will go very far so the pace over EV infrastructure build out will be very slow.

Lets be clear, solar panels DOES NOT add additional capacity to a buildings electricity supply, it just reduces your electricty cosumption.

So you still need to upgrade the buildings electrical infrastructure and supply back to the street to support EV charging, even if the electricity 70% of the time is coming from the solar panels. It may be possible to put in some smart system that sheds the demand from EV charging as the clouds go past so it doesnt overload the supply, but the end user experience wont be great and may result in people chosing the shop and charge elsewhere.

So unless the site is a greenfields development, or the EV charging infrastructure is set up as an off grid arrangement with the panels in the carpark (which means charging only when the sun is shining) and promoted as 100% green to justify the inconvenience, there is unlikely to be a return on the investment of adding solar.

Great to see this thread – I reckon you were inspired by my suggestion of such a thread in the 'Electric Vehicles' thread!

Is anyone else in Victoria sick of all of these 50kw installations? It's great there is a rollout at all I suppose, but 50kw is such an awkward speed (too slow for a quick pitstop, too fast for destination charging). And the majority are single-stall only. Combined with the poor reliability, it's just such a bad experience, even if Vic Gov can tick off 'coverage'.

50kW is ok if you're stopping for lunch but too slow if you're just stopping for a break. Deployed at meal locations I think its ok, otherwise I agree that you need faster or slower. Single stall charging is a bad idea though. It creates a single point of failure and gives users a much lower probability of a successful charge either through prior occupation or some kind of fault. Multiple charge slots is a must.

There needs to be a website tracking/graphing the reliability of EV chargers. The Bairnsdale one (Chargefox) was only installed in Feb 2023 and had been largely unreliable.
