I am trying to recover lost photo files from my digital camera.

Are there any free, or cheap, and easy to use data recovery websites (under AUD$50), that exist to recover lost photo files?

Or do most websites with such software, charge an expensive subscription fee, compared to finding and paying a local computer technician to do it?

I was using my digital camera on holiday last week.

At the time, I thought each photo file was saved to the SD card.

But when I returned home and later went through copying the photo files to my computer (Windows 11) and other drives. I noticed that some images taken during one day, were not listed and appearing in the folder with the others.

I have had my digital camera and memory card for four years, and have not experienced this before.

If the fault is the SD card, you could give the free "Recuva" software a try.

I found that it works better than a paid software package I tried (from Nero – which was useless) to use when I accidentally deleted images from an SD card.

Maybe it will find the missing images.

If it is not the SD card but something else, I don't know of any other options. perhaps someone else will advise.

I noticed that some images taken during one day, were not listed and appearing in the folder with the others.

So the images were there, but not in the expected location (folder) on the SD card?

If so, that would suggest the images are still there and the problem lies in the camera settings (where to save to?)

How do you transfer from camera to device .. remove SD card and insert in computer, or cable connect? Whatever way, try the other way before applying any software remedies

EDIT
What happens when you use a search program like Everything and/or UltraSearch and/or Agent Ransack to search the SD card just for every file (*.* search criteria). Are the "missing" files listed? Those programs should show the full storage path, albeit unexpected/misdirected

Old SD cards default to 'read only' mode when they fail.
Chances are some photos weren't saved.
And you can't recover what wasn't saved.

Free. Easy to use.

I'd accidentally formatted the card before I'd copied photos to my laptop. I always format my cards, rather than deleting. Recuva found everything back to when I bought my previous camera.

OP needs to take some new photos and check if they are actually being saved on the SD card.

Someone used my camera a few days later, with the same memory card still inside and they all saved to that card.

The various data recovery files websites all seem to charge a costly fee (US Dollars) to try and do a full recovery or retrieval.

I am not technically familiar with how to search, and find missing image files.

I connected my digital camera to notebook (Windows 11) by USB cable.
I used a SanDisk Extreme memory card.

I am not technically familiar with how to search, and find missing image files.

I doubt whether you'll get a simple quick-fix solution without some knowledge/experience.

It may be appropriate to seek other (hands-on) assistance

I bought a Verbatim card reader and connected it by USB to my HP notebook (Windows 11).

My digital camera is a Panasonic Lumix FZ80.
The memory card is a SanDisk Extreme 64 GB 150 MB/S V30.

I wondered that. But I recognised the missing photos they took, on one of data recovery software programs from one of the websites.

Download the free version of Recuva. There is nothing to pay. Tell it to search the sd card. It will find the images if they've ever been on the card. Like I said before it found images back to a previous camera, even though the card had been reformatted multiple times over years.

So, I tried EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard Professional.
Of the 234 jpg photo files, only the first 29 (titles in brackets) can be viewed on the Microsoft Photos app/program (Windows 11).

When I click on any of the others, a black screen with the words: "It appears that we don't support this file format." (Despite each, also being jpg files.)

Oddly enough, I noticed on the EaseUS Data Recovery program,
that a tiny thumbnail (mini preview) image shows what each of the seemingly damaged photo files look like. (That cannot appear when opened on Microsoft Photos.)

Try R-Photo. I have personally used their software to recover files from an SD card that was corrupted after an overseas holiday; I got back and Windows wouldn't even recognise it as a device. (I didn't use R-Photo but their main software, R-Studio – IIRC R-Photo didn't exist back then but they have since made it available completely for free.)

You can make an image of the SD card and operate on that which is great as it stops potential further degradation of the SD card. Though at this point this'd be the time I'd toss it and buy a new one!

Means the header is corrupted on the file. So it can any format you like, you could even call it photo.abcd but the header still calls it what it is. The Microsoft Photos reads that header to figure out how to display the photo, if it's corrupted, it throws an error, even if the rest of the photo is okay.

You can probably get around the issue by trying another program. The web browser is one, Microsoft Paint is another, it's an old program, but it has its uses. If it opens in Paint, hit save as > jpg and save it again, this will rewrite the header. If it opens in a browser you can use another program to take a picture of the screen – Microsoft snipping tool or I use ShareX (free), to take a snapshot and save it as a jpg.

So if none of that works, your last option is a program that fixes this very issue. I did find this program: https://www.disktuna.com/jpgrepair-fix-and-repair-corrupt-jpeg-headers-and-invalid-markers/

It's free to view, but not to restore, so you can see if it works first. If it shows an image and looks like it'll work, then you can buy it and restore – This will depend on how important the pictures are. If it just some photos of what you had for breakfast last week, then probably not worth the cost, but your call on that one.
