Dorotea Iovino has been leading the research activities of the global ocean and sea ice modelling group since 2015. She is currently coordinating the Research Unit on AI for Earth System Modelling, focusing on the integration of machine learning and artificial intelligence into climate research. She has more than 20 years of experience in the field of ocean science, with particular expertise in polar dynamics, sea ice processes, and their role within the climate system.

She holds a Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography from the Geophysical Institute at the University of Bergen (Norway) and further developed her expertise in numerical modelling during her postdoctoral work at the Laboratoire d’Océanographie et du Climat: Expérimentation et Approches Numériques (LOCEAN) in Paris (France).

Over the past years, Dr. Iovino has coordinated and contributed to numerous national and

international scientific projects. Her work spans both technical and scientific aspects of ocean and sea ice modelling, with a particular emphasis on high-resolution modelling systems. Since 2017, she has been a member of the CLIVAR/CliC Northern Oceans Regional Panel (NORP), and since 2020, a member of the CLIVAR Ocean Model Development Panel (OMDP). She also plays a leading role in the development of the NEMO modelling system, serving as co-chair of the NEMO Development Committee and as a member of the Sea Ice Working Group.

Dr. Iovino is actively engaged in higher education as a contract lecturer in several Ph.D. programmes: Science and Management of Climate Change and Polar Science at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, and Future Earth, Climate Change and Societal Challenge at the University of Bologna.
