2D4D – Disruptive Digitalization for Decarbonization

Digitalization will fundamentally change all sectors of the European economy in the next decades. At the same time, the EU is committed to reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. These two transformation will undoubtedly affect each other, but the extent to which they will be mutually supporting is currently unknown. Most importantly, there is a danger that the digital transformation will delay the progress towards a net-zero carbon economy. The EU-funded 2D4D project aims at ensuring that the digital transformation is not a barrier to decarbonisation, rather an enabler. The project will identify and measure the decarbonisation consequences of three disruptive digitalisation technologies in hard-to-decarbonise sectors: additive manufacturing in industry, mobility-as-a-service in transportation, and AI in buildings. The project will produce a distinctive data collection to examine the technical and socioeconomic potential of these technologies, enhance decarbonisation narratives and ensure that digital technology supports energy transition.

2nd Agreement for Technical-Scientific Cooperation between the Italian State Property Agency (Agenzia del Demanio) and the Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change Foundation (CMCC)

The cooperation between the Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change (CMCC) and the Italian State Property Agency is founded on a shared commitment to the public interest, aiming to address the challenges posed by climate change impacts on public real estate assets and their surrounding environments. Under a renewed framework agreement (January 2025), the partnership focuses on the development and testing of innovative methodologies for climate risk assessment and management, in alignment with international standards and the “Do No Significant Harm” (DNSH) principle required for NRRP investments. The research activity also supports the implementation of solutions to enhance resilience and reduce the impacts of climate change on public real estate assets. Its ultimate goal is to develop and test an advanced climate risk assessment tool—consistent with the latest scientific frameworks and key regulatory references on climate proofing—that integrates the outcomes of the First Convention, including Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and adaptation actions.

A high-resolution ensemble of global projections of storm surges and waves

A high-resolution ensemble of global projections of storm surges and waves project aims to develop high-resolution global projections of extreme sea levels. Using cutting-edge numerical models and climate data from CMIP6, this research will assess the impact of climate change on storm surges and wave patterns across the world’s coastlines.By simulating multiple socioeconomic pathways scenarios, the project will provide critical insights for coastal risk assessment, adaptation strategies, and policy-making.

ACCREU: Assessing Climate Change Risk in EUrope

ACCREU is a project funded by HORIZON Europe RIA (Research and Innovation Action) investigating, in a fully integrated framework, climate change impacts, mitigation, adaptation and prospects for a sustainable social and economic development in the EU. ACCREU will identify challenges, highlight opportunities and deliver practical solutions to policy making and societal actors at the EU, EU Member State, region and community level to accelerate a just societal transformation towards climate resilience in the short, medium and long term.

ACLIMAS SWIM – Adaptation to Climate Change of the Mediterranean Agricultural System

A project funded within the Sustainable Water Integrated Management (SWIM) to bring a durable improvement in the agricultural water management and a broader economic development in target areas in the context of adaptation to climate change, increasing water scarcity, and desertification risk.

AcquaGuard: Nature based solutions for Flood Prevention

AcquaGuard is a project funded by the Italy – Croatia INTERREG Programme aimed at developing the capabilities of local and regional governments to systematically plan, integrate, and implement Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) to face climate-related risks and hazards. In particular, through intensive cross-border cooperation between partners, as well as a co-creation process with all relevant stakeholders, AcquaGuard will offer a comprehensive approach for deploying NBS focused on flood prevention, to regions and cities. The cross-border cooperation will be fully leveraged within the project by developing a Decision Support Matrix for NBS prioritization and selection, capacity-building sessions, project documentation, and other joint dissemination activities.

ACQUAOUNT: Adapting to Climate change by QUantifying optimal Allocation of water resOUrces and socio-ecoNomic inTerlinkages

Agriculture is by far the most water demanding sector in the Mediterranean and a sustainable use of water, combined with economic growth, cannot be achieved without improving irrigation efficiency and water productivity. The current heavy depletion of water sources is leading to water scarcity and degradation, deterioration of ecosystem services, conflicts with domestic and industrial uses and, in general, it poses limitations to economic growth. These trends will be exacerbated by CC. The ACQUAOUNT project aims to improve IWRM and sustainable irrigation through the deployment of innovative tools, smart water services and solutions, for public and private use, while contributing to climate resilience.

ActFast: Actions for Climate Transition by Developing Future Aquaculture Strategies and Technologies

How to promote a sustainable future for fish production in Europe? This is the question at the heart of ActFast (Actions for Climate Transition by Developing Future Aquaculture Strategies and Technologies), a Horizon Europe project coordinated by the Department of Veterinary Medical Sciences at the University of Bologna. The project addresses the challenge by combining sustainable farming practices, environmental monitoring and Artificial Intelligence. A multidisciplinary team of 28 partners from 10 EU countries, plus Norway, Tunisia and Egypt, will collaborate to develop innovative strategies for future aquaculture. In this context, the Regional Ocean Forecasting Systems (ROFS) division will play a key role as work package leader, contributing substantially to the development of high-resolution climate projections and forecasting systems specifically for the aquaculture sector.

Adaptation AGORA: A Gathering place to cO-design and co-cReate Adaptation

Adaptation AGORA will support the overall objectives of the Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change by leveraging and step forwarding best-practices, innovative approaches, policy instruments and governance mechanisms to meaningfully and effectively engage communities and regions in climate actions, accelerating and upscaling adaptation process for building a climate resilient Europe. It will promote democracy, climate justice, gender equality, equity, and foster adaptive capacity and citizens’ empowerment to pro-actively support decision-making processes.

AdaptationHubs: National Adaptation Hubs

AdaptationHubs is a project funded by Horizon Europe Coordination and Support action (HORIZON-MISS-2024-CLIMA-01-02). The main results of the project culminate in the establishment and implementation of 27 National Multilevel Governance Adaptation Hubs and a robust grouping and twinning scheme, which will facilitate national, cross-border and EU-wide exchanges and cooperations to strengthen integrated adaptation planning and policy making. Each National Adaptation Hub involves national experts, which are closely linked to their respective national adaptation governance, as well as key stakeholders, who will support engagement at all levels of governance in achievement of the objectives of the EU Mission on Climate Change Adaptation. The objective is to ensure long-lasting and self-sustainable National Multilevel Governance Adaptation Hubs (NAHs) across the EU.

ADB – Strengthening Planning Capacity for Low Carbon Growth in Developing Asia

This technical assistance is designed to facilitate developing Asia’s transition toward low-carbon development pathway and aims to be a platform for knowledge-sharing, policy dialogue and cooperation.

AdJUST – ADVANCING THE UNDERSTANDING OF CHALLENGES, POLICY OPTIONS AND MEASURES TO ACHIEVE A JUST EU ENERGY TRANSITION

AdJUST is a project funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe programme. and carried out by a transdisciplinary European consortium consisting of 9 EU partners, 2 UK associated partners and other 11 EU associated partners. The objectives of AdJUST are to achieve a step change in societal understanding of the distributive repercussions of the transition to climate neutrality, and to identify effective and actively-supported policy interventions to accompany climate action so that no-one is left behind.

AdriaClim – Climate change information, monitoring and management tools for adaptation strategies in Adriatic coastal areas

The main objective of AdriaClim is to improve climate resilience in the cooperation area, by increasing the capacity to develop new climate adaptation plans and update existing ones and develop mitigation strategies based on high resolution, more accurate and reliable climate information (observations and integrated modeling) focussed on the coastal and marine areas (threatened by risks such as sea level rise, sea temperature and salinity anomalies, coastal erosion and salinization of freshwater) and related economic sectors and ecosystem services. AdriaClim aims at developing an Adriatic scale regional plus local scale for each Pilot integrated information systems composed by hydro-meteo-marine climatological databases (model scenarios and observation) and knowledge-based tools (e.g indicators) for advanced dynamical implementation of regional climate adaptation plans relevant and accessible for entire the Programme area and Countries.
