Ending Nuclear Tests

The Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) bans nuclear explosions by everyone, everywhere: on the Earth's surface, in the atmosphere, underwater and underground.

The Treaty

The CTBT bans all nuclear explosions on Earth whether for military or for peaceful purposes. It comprises a preamble, 17 articles, two annexes and a Protocol with two annexes.

The Organization

The Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization was established on 19 November 1996 by a Resolution adopted by the Meeting of States Signatories at the United Nations in New York.

States Signatories

The Preparatory Commission is tasked with laying the groundwork required and build up the global verification regime to monitor compliance with the Treaty as countries join the organization.

Article XIV Conferences (AFC)

The United Nations Secretary-General convenes the Article XIV (AFC) conferences to negotiate and issue a joint statement urging States that have not yet signed or ratified the Treaty to do so as soon as possible.

The aim of these meetings is to sustain and generate further political momentum as well as public attention for the entry into force of the Treaty.
