The Expert Team Meeting Advances Fourth Assessment Report on Climate Change and Tropical Cyclones

The Expert Team for the Fourth Assessment Report on the Impacts of Climate Change on Tropical Cyclones in the Typhoon Committee Region (TC-AR4) convened a two-day hybrid meeting in Macao, China, on 22–23 July 2026. The meeting brought together lead authors and senior advisors from across the Typhoon Committee Members to review draft chapters, strengthen scientific consistency, and advance preparations for the report's publication. The meeting benefited from the strong support of the Typhoon Committee Secretariat.







The meeting was chaired by Dr. Xin HUANG of the China Meteorological Administration (CMA). Other lead authors participating in the meeting included Dr. Yin-lam NG of the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO), Ms. Seonghee WON of the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), and Dr. Munehiko YAMAGUCHI of the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). Professor Johnny C.L. CHAN of City University of Hong Kong / Asia-Pacific Typhoon Collaborative Research Center and Dr. Wei ZHANG of Utah State University participated as Senior Advisors, providing scientific guidance throughout the discussions.

Over the two-day meeting, the expert team conducted a comprehensive chapter-by-chapter review of all seven chapters. Participants reached agreement on the overall structure of the report, strengthened consistency across chapters, and incorporated the latest scientific findings published since the Third Assessment Report in 2020. The meeting also reviewed key supporting sections and discussed plans for publishing the report. In addition, participants explored ways to maximize the report's contribution to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Seventh Assessment Report (IPCC AR7).

Following the meeting, chapter leads will revise their drafts in line with the agreed recommendations. A consolidated draft will then be circulated to Typhoon Committee Members for review ahead of the Integrated Workshop (IWS) in 2026. The final report is expected to be endorsed at the 60th Session of the Typhoon Committee in 2027.
