Extreme wildfires in western Europe expose millions to dangerous air pollution levels

Forecast data from the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) shows that the wildfires that have ravaged several countries in southwestern Europe exposed millions to extremely poor air quality levels over the last few days.

Fire Emissions Watch: global wildfire emission data at your fingertips

The Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) is introducing Fire Emissions Watch, its latest application providing easy and intuitive access to near-real time global fire emissions data. Based on the Global Fire Assimilation System (GFAS) dataset, showing both satellite-based emission estimates and forecasts of the resulting smoke plumes from the Integrated Forecasting System (IFS) of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) Fire Emissions Watch is a powerful tool to explore the latest fire data and the historical context alike in just a few clicks.

IWGGMS: Building the future of satellite-based greenhouse gas monitoring

The Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) co-organised the 22nd edition of the International Workshop on Greenhouse Gas Measurements from Space (IWGGMS) with the German Aerospace Centre DLR (Deutsche Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt). The meeting, on 29 June – 2 July 2026, gathered nearly 300 participants – 210 on site and 70 online – from across the world in Bonn, where both ECMWF* and DLR have offices.

Extreme wildfires in Canada lead to severe air pollution in the United States

The Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) is tracking the thick smoke plumes originating from a growing number of large-scale wildfires across Canada since the end of June. The smoke is causing severe air quality degradation from the densely populated Great Lakes region, all the way to the East coast and on the North Atlantic.

The global aerosol monitoring community meets in ECMWF Bonn offices

Organised by the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service, the 16th meeting of the International Cooperative for Aerosol Prediction (ICAP) took place in Bonn on 10-12 June 2026, and gathered participants from aerosol forecast centres and the aerosol observation community.

Globally, the year to date has seen moderate biomass burning emissions according to the Global Fire Assimilation System (GFAS) dataset, based on satellite observations of active fires, produced by the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service.

The Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) has published its Assessment Report on European Air Quality 2025, confirming improving air quality trends in Europe for most of the pollutants regulated by the Ambient Air Quality Directive as emissions of major pollutants decline across Europe.

Severe haze episodes affected large parts of Southeast Asia during spring 2026, despite below-average wildfire activity over much of the upper Southeast Asia region. Thailand, on the other hand, saw estimated wildfire carbon emissions for April at their highest level since 2016.
