O.P.

I currently have a 50/~10 FFTP with Belong but want to up to 500/50. Apart from being expensive, Belong are a PITA to deal with so I'm happy to change . . . but to whom? There are plenty of recommendations on choosing an ISP but I'm still confused (!). So I want to approach it from the other direction – who are the ISPs to avoid and why? $$$ are certainly a consideration for a pensioner!

Performance wise they're all similar. Customer service wise you really shouldn't have to "deal" with them after being connected. They all have max month to month contracts so if you don't like who you choose just choose another.

Focussing on $ look at Leaptel, Exetel, Superloop, Carbon. (Anyone but Dodo)

Leaptel $79.95 per month for 12 months then $92.95 per month.

Aussie Broadband $80 per month for 6 months then $95 per month.

Exetel $80 per month.

Neptune Internet $85 per month.

I changed from Spintel to Tangerine a year ago. They had special pricing available, so I took it. Happy as a monkey with two tails since. Spintel had previously been good, but I was having issues with service, their CS had gone downhill from being excellent a few years prior, to abysmal, so I left. Chatted to Tangerine last week about pricing and they came up with something that worked for me. No hassles, no drama, quick to respond through their portal when I lodged a ticket and the CS rep was able to be understood (I have difficulty with South Asian accents due to partial hearing loss). The resolution had already been worked out before they rang me, so Tangerine for me.

ISPs to avoid

Spintel, due to deteriorated CS (near non-existent) and unresolved network problems.

Avoid Telstra. I joined up for their 3 month deal with significant price cuts. Just wasn't worth it. Their billing and technical teams don't talk to each other. This causes all sorts of problems with when you get charged etc. I ended up leaving 6 weeks in essentially "paying" to leave. Will never deal with them again.

Now I just check out ABB, Leaptel, Superloop and a few others. See who has the best deal, then switch again.

Superloop is fine until you try to leave, they lock you into an anti-competitive 30 day notice period.

Typically under 30 mins however NBN state it can be up to 48 hours.

If you have the 4-port connection box/NTD, then I'd add the new service on another port rather than transfer the existing one.
Then cancel the old one once the new service is working fine – this avoids any hassles that may come up.

Exetel $80 per month.

I switched from Exetel to Amaysim. Amaysim offered a deal: $40 per month for two months, then $80 per month (as long as you also have a phone plan with Amaysim). Since I already have the phone plan, I'm paying $80 per month for 500 Mbps download speed.

The Optus network that Amaysim uses is also much, much better in terms of quality than what I experienced with Exetel.

Unless you're happy to hop between ISPs every six or twelve months, I would recommend Neptune as a solid provider at a reasonable ongoing price, $85 for 500/50. Great professional local support and a solid network. A free 5-day trial is available, so you could try them out on a second port and then decide whether you want to stay with them. If you do decide to stay with them, ring up Belong and cancel.

No, once the second service is active on your NTD, for example, on UNI-D2, you would need to unplug the cable from port 1 (UNI-D1) and plug it into port 2 (UNI-D2). You would also need to reboot your router.
