Opening

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is a vision for people, planet, peace and prosperity to be achieved through partnership and solidarity. It is now in its fourth year of implementation. Over the past years, progress has been made with regard to a number of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their targets. A number of actions have been undertaken by Governments and other stakeholders to respond to the 2030 Agenda more broadly. However, progress has been slow on many SDGs and the most vulnerable people and countries continue to suffer the most. The global response needs to become more ambitious. The HLPF will take stock of where we are in terms of SDG progress and identify challenges and gaps in SDG achievement. Speakers will bring various perspectives on the follow up and review of implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs. They will indicate what they see as priorities for the political leadership and point to urgent multi-stakeholder action needed to accelerate progress. The discussions of the HLPF under the auspices of ECOSOC will contribute to the preparations of the HLPF under the auspices of the General Assembly – the SDG Summit to be convened in September 2019.

Proposed guiding questions:

Where do we stand in terms of achieving the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs?

What are the most important trends and challenges that could affect our ability to achieve the inter-connected SDGs and to ensure inclusiveness and equality?

What are urgent actions that could overcome current challenges and accelerate implementation of the 2030 Agenda and SDGs?

Chair:

H.E. In 2011 she co-created the first climate change focused education program in schools and communities across Micronesia. The program, CADRE (Climate Change Adaptation, Disaster Risk Reduction & Education) worked with over 10,000 students and 3,000 community members across the Micronesian islands to raise awareness on the impacts of climate change on their communities and develop community action plans to adapt to these impacts. These Community Action Plans have resulted in projects such as pandanus planting for coastal strengthening, mangrove reforestation to protect against salt-water intrusion, awareness campaigns for marine protected areas and rainwater catchments to prepare for droughts. After the discontinuation of this program, she and her husband co-founded Island PRIDE (Promoting Resilience through Involvement, Development & Education) a non-profit organization, to continue this work to empower her islands in the face of climate change by engaging youth to be proactive stewards of their island environment. She also serves as a Community Resilience Specialist at the Pacific Resources for Education & Learning as well as the Head of Renewable Energy for the Chuuk Public Utilities Corporation, where she is spearheading their transition to renewable energy and away from fossil fuels. Through this work, she’s been a vocal activist for climate action and climate justice at several international platforms including the One Young World Summit, World Conservation Congress, World Forum on Natural Capital, and the UN ECOSOC Youth Forum. She lives in Chuuk, Micronesia with her husband Alvin, son Tre and daughter Tasi.

Ms. Najaat Maalla M'jid

Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General on Violence against Children

Ms. Najaat Maalla M'jid

Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General on Violence against Children

On 30 May 2019, the Secretary-General of the United Nations appointed Dr. Najaat Maalla M’jid as his Special Representative on Violence against Children.
