[Event Report] From Climate Loss Assessment to Community Resilience: The Sri Lanka Experience Using the Climate Loss Index (CLIx)

A national research findings dissemination workshop titled “Strengthening Climate Resilience in Coastal Zones: Translating Research into Policy and Action” was held on 1 July 2026 at Waters Edge, Battaramulla, Sri Lanka. This workshop is part of the research initiative "Enhancing Connectivity and Resilience: Assessing Climate-Induced Economic and Non-Economic Losses and Damages in the Indian Ocean Island Nations"—is undertaken under the Division of Island Nations, Ocean Policy Research Institute (OPRI), Sasakawa Peace Foundation (SPF). The primary aim of this research is to generate evidence-based insights into how climate change is impacting small island states in the Indian Ocean region both economically and socially.

[Event Report (Preliminary)] Eminent Persons Meeting on Sustainable Blue Economy and Food Security in Africa 2026

Africa, which continues to experience rapid population growth and economic development, holds significant potential to advance a sustainable blue economy that enhances marine and aquatic food production while promoting ecosystem health, biodiversity conservation, and socioeconomic equity. To foster international partnerships aimed at achieving sustainable development in Africa, advancing a sustainable blue economy, and strengthening food security, The Nippon Foundation, the Sasakawa Peace Foundation, and the Sasakawa Africa Foundation convened the above-mentioned Eminent Persons Meeting and a Special International Symposium in June 2026, bringing together former Heads of Government and leaders of African regional organizations. A summary of the events is provided below.

IINA: Sudan in Turmoil: A Proxy War of the Middle East and the Risk of State Collapse

Three years have passed since the military clash erupted in Sudan in April 2023 between the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary “Rapid Support Force (RSF)”, yet there is still no sign of a resolution to the conflict. Since April 2023, at the height of the crisis, approximately 14 million people have been displaced from their homes; more than 20 million—equivalent to half the population—have been exposed to severe food shortages and are at risk of starvation, sexual violence against women has been rampant, and there are reports that genocide may have occurred.

IINA: Australia’s National Defence Strategy and the Strengthening of Bilateral Ties with Japan

On April 16, 2026, the Australian government released the public version of its 2026 National Defence Strategy (NDS) in line with its commitment to update policy at two-year intervals. While the document contains no major “surprises”, it reflects a strengthening of resolve among defence planners and enduring commitment towards building Australian capabilities, both independently, and with key partners and allies such as Japan and US. This trajectory was mapped out in the earlier 2023 Defence Strategic Review (DSR) and proceeding National Defence Strategy (2024) but has taken on a new momentum in a worsening global and regional security environment.

IINA: Weaponizing the Strait of Hormuz: Naval Mines and the Spread of Economic Coercion

The United States and Israel launched coordinated strikes against Iran in late February 2026, prompting Iran to retaliate with attacks on US military bases and infrastructure in neighboring countries. A ceasefire remains in place as of May 21, but the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz continues, inflicting major damage to the global economy.
