UCAR UVisit

Bringing our Science to Universities

UVisit participation strengthens our community through collaborative research, teaching, and technical support visits that offer opportunities for intellectual growth and professional development. For NSF NCAR and UCAR scientists, engineers, and other professionals, the program provides opportunities to visit a university and helps build lasting connections with students and faculty.

UCAR's UVisit program provides financial support for these visits, which can include:

giving lectures, tutorials, or workshops

collaborative research with university faculty and students

teaching a class in person, remotely, or through a combination of methods

providing training and/or technical support for university facilities or equipment.

UVisit Program Guidelines

The visit should be of direct benefit the university, faculty, or students

Priority is given to UCAR university members and emerging research institutions

Requests can be made by the university or an NSF NCAR or UCAR staff member

Visits can range from a few days to a few weeks to a few months

Funding is intended to supplement support already in place from the university and the lab or program

UVisit typically provides funds for the travel portion of a visit, but other, extenuating requests may be considered. If the visit is to teach a class at a university, it is expected that the university would pay the staff’s salary, with some co-sponsorship from the NSF NCAR or UCAR lab

Visits must be approved by the lab or program director and the department chair at the university

A post-visit executive summary is required and should address:
The work that was accomplished

How the university, faculty, or students were benefited

Identify any opportunities for continued engagement between the university, NSF NCAR, and UCAR

Funding is limited. Requests should be financially prudent to allow collaboration at as many universities as possible. The typical request ranges from $1,500 - $5,000.

UVisit accepts requests from colleges and universities as well as proposals from NSF NCAR and UCAR staff. Priority is given to proposals for visits at UCAR member institutions. However, applications for visits to any North American university will be considered.
