Three years of civil war have pushed the crisis in Sudan to unprecedented levels. More than 33.7 million people are in need of humanitarian aid – the highest number in the world – including 7.3 million women of reproductive age and 1.1 million pregnant women.

The conflict has been marked by horrific sexual violence against women and girls, kidnappings and child marriage, with survivors struggling to access safe spaces and healthcare.

The health system has been severely hindered by ongoing fighting, deadly attacks on health facilities, mass displacement, a lack of essential medical supplies, and shortages of health workers and funding. In conflict-affected areas, many health facilities are either closed or barely functioning.

Displaced women and girls often walk for weeks in search of safety. Refugee camps and shelters are overcrowded and unsafe, offering little to no protection against sexual violence. For many women and girls in the hardest-hit regions, life-saving reproductive healthcare is hours away.

UNFPA is working with partners to provide reproductive health and protection services in areas with high numbers of internally displaced people. This includes deploying mobile teams and delivering medical supplies to build capacity for maternal health services, including emergency obstetric care and the clinical management of rape, as well as establishing and supporting safe spaces for women and girls.
