CMA Provided Operational Continuity Support for the Earthquake in Myanmar

To enhance the resilience of National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) against disasters and the risk of operational disruption, the WMO Guidelines for Business Continuity Management of NMHSs (WMO-No. 1361) emphasizes the importance of establishing strong partnerships. Based on this principle, China Meteorological Administration (CMA) has established an Early Warning Support Mechanism (EWSM) and conducts regular cooperation with neighboring countries. Following a powerful 7.9-magnitude earthquake in central Myanmar in March 2025, this cooperation mechanism was rapidly activated. CMA worked closely with the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH) of Myanmar, immediately initiating dedicated weather monitoring and forecasting support for the affected area. Under the extreme circumstances where frontline operational capacity might have been impaired, CMA assisted DMH in maintaining core forecasting and early warning services, striving to enhance its business continuity and sustainable service capacity. Meanwhile, the forecast conclusions were shared in real-time with the WMO Coordination Mechanism (WCM), supporting the United Nations and humanitarian agencies in disaster assessment and relief decision-making.
