About Us

China Meteorological Administration (CMA) is accelerating technology innovation in meteorology. To meet the goals of the "Outline for High Quality Development of Meteorology (2022-2035)", CMA implements the "China Meteorological Science and Technology Development Plan (2021-2035)", strengthens basic research on synoptic mechanisms, regular patterns of climate, climate change, occurrence mechanisms of meteorological disasters, and the interaction between multiple layers of the Earth System.

Research Achievement

High quality scientific and technological achievements have played a positive role in promoting the high-quality development of meteorology. In the past five years, CMA has published an average of 6000 scientific and technological papers per year, including 1400 international journal papers. Compared with international peers, the proportions of highly cited papers, high impact journal papers, and international cooperation papers are among the top in the world. Multiple high-quality achievements in the meteorological industry have received national science and technology awards. Since 2000, a total of 16 meteorological scientific and technological achievements have received national level science and technology awards, and 8 have received international awards. Meanwhile, the progress of meteorological science and technology has been strongly supported by a series of outstanding scientific and technological achievements that have not only made innovative breakthroughs in core technologies but also have high application values for the operational service. Significant progress has been made in NWP, typhoon monitoring and forecasting, climate model projection, comprehensive analysis and processing of meteorological information, and integrated meteorological observation.

Scientific Experiment

CMA actively conducts atmospheric science experiments targeting key synoptic processes and climate patterns. Based on large-scale mobile observation platforms, multiple types of remote sensing platforms, and fixed observation station networks, collaborative observation scientific experiments have been carried out, which focus on the generation environment of typhoons, heavy rainfall, hail, tornadoes, and lightning, multi-scale, fine structure, and the generation mechanism of extreme weather events. Meanwhile, CMA strengthens the construction of meteorological observation platforms for coastal areas and deep sea in the Asia-India-Pacific region. And coordinated observation of land and ocean in the monsoon area as well as the "Asia-Australia-Africa" monsoon scientific experiment have been performed. In addition, comprehensive observation experiments on the atmospheric water cycle and its impact in key areas of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau have been conducted.

Research Program

CMA, relying on national science and technology programs, focuses on promoting basic meteorological studies and key technology research. CMA actively undertakes key projects of national key research and development plans and puts great efforts in key technological breakthroughs in core fields of meteorology, such as Earth System NWP models, synoptic mechanisms and forecast for disastrous weather, climate change, satellite remote sensing, weather modification, and meteorological equipment. The technological innovation capabilities of precise monitoring, accurate forecasting, and tailor-made service have been reinforced to provide strong support for the high-quality development of the meteorological undertakings. CMA and the National Natural Science Foundation of China have established a joint meteorological fund, with which well-organized and goal-oriented basic research has been conducted, focusing on core areas such as Earth System NWP, theories and methods for disastrous weather monitoring and forecasting, the application of artificial intelligence in meteorology, technology and application of atmospheric observation, and short-term climate prediction and theory and methods of climate change.

CMA-University Cooperation

CMA continues to deepen the reform of meteorological education, accelerate innovation in meteorological technology, and strengthen the cultivation of meteorological talents. As of 2023, it has signed cooperation agreements with 29 universities to jointly carry out disciplinary construction, talent cultivation, scientific research, and platform construction. From 2018 to 2023, CMA has received over 4600 graduates and established a high-quality meteorological talent team with atmospheric science as the mainstay and a variety oforganically integrated specialities .
Through CMA-University cooperation mechanism, 1058 research projects have been completed, with a total funding of nearly 600 million yuan. Nearly 300 achievements from CMA-University cooperation have been transformed and applied in key operational fields such as weather, climate, and climate change, and 62 scientific researchachievementshave been awarded provincial and ministerial level science and technology awards.
CAMS is a comprehensive research institution that holds a leading position in meteorological sciences. With the aim to supporting meteorological operational services, it focuses on the basic research, the applied research and forward-looking technical research and endeavors to explore the key technical hurdles.

Research Institute

Meteorological research organizations are the main force in promoting scientific and technological innovation in meteorological services, including national level research institutes, provincial research institutes, and new research and development institutions. Among them, there are 9 national research institutes, including China Academy of Meteorological Sciences (CAMS) and 8 professional meteorological research institutes, namely, Beijing Urban Meteorological Research Institute, Shenyang Institute of Atmospheric Environment, Shanghai Typhoon Research Institute, Wuhan Institute of Heavy Rain, Guangzhou Institute of Tropical Marine Meteorology, Qinghai Tibet Plateau Meteorological Research Institute, Lanzhou Institute of Arid Meteorology, and Urumqi Institute of Desert Meteorology. There are 22 provincial-level scientific research centers, distributed in provincial (autonomous region, city level) meteorological services that are not regional meteorological centers. The new research and development institutions include Shenzhen Meteorological Innovation Research Institute, Nanjing Joint Institute for Atmospheric Sciences, Qingdao Institute of Ocean Meteorology, and Asia Pacific Typhoon Research Center.CAMS is a comprehensive research institution that holds a leading position in meteorological sciences.
