China's local early warning practice丨Tianjin Meteorological Department made every effort to protect the city and people

Since the beginning of this year's flood season, facing multiple rounds of heavy rainfall during the flood season, Tianjin Municipal Meteorological Service has strengthened the first line of defense in meteorological disaster prevention and mitigation.

From July 23 to 29, Tianjin experienced persistent heavy rainfall. In the early hours of July 29, forecasters of the Service and the Jizhou District Meteorological Department monitored radar echo movements, compared numerical weather prediction conclusions, and assessed the areas and intensity of heavy precipitation to provide decision-making support for the relocation of tens of thousands of residents by relevant departments.

Meanwhile, forecasters were stationed at the Municipal Emergency Management Command Center. The Municipal Meteorological Observatory conducted joint consultations with departments including emergency management, water resources, planning, and natural resources, providing hourly weather forecast services and analyzing the evolving weather situation. Dynamically adjusted warning levels for heavy rain, thunderstorms, and maritime strong winds and activated mass dissemination of warning messages, reaching over 20 million people across the city.

The Service provided customized and tailored meteorological support for key sectors including transportation, electric power, and urban operations. Traffic meteorological bulletins were sent to traffic management departments, highway units, railway operators, and support services, highlighting impacts of heavy precipitation and strong winds on highways and railway lines. Specialized forecasts and real-time information were supplied for power grid dispatch, safety supervision, and maintenance departments to ensure secure grid operation. And maritime gale warnings were sent to port enterprises and maritime authorities to safeguard offshore operations and navigation safety.
