On March 21, at the launching ceremony of the Open Day for the 2026 World Meteorological Day activities, the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) released the first set of images of FENGYUN-4C (FY-4C) meteorological satellite. FY-4C was successfully launched from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center on December 27, 2025. On January 6, 2026, the CMA officially launched the in-orbit testing of FY-4C.

FY-4C will be put into operational trial operation during this year's main flood season to enhance the monitoring and early warning capability for short-range weather systems, especially meso- and small-scale weather systems.



The Lightning Mapping Imager captures footage of lightning activity near the equator and in the Southern Hemisphere.






The Geostationary Interferometric Infrared Sounder measures vertical atmospheric temperature, humidity, and atmospheric composition.

The first set of released images shows that the imagery from Advanced Geostationary Radiation Imager (AGRI) is clear in texture and rich in details.The cloud animation over North China depicts a shortwave trough cloud system continuously moving eastward from western Inner Mongolia to affect Beijing, enabling clear identification of high-level cirrus clouds and revealing the evolution of weather systems.

Geostationary Interferometric Infrared Sounder (GIIRS), with its fine spectral resolution, can successfully capture the vertical structural characteristics of the atmosphere. Compared with previous meteorological satellites, it provides temperature information at more levels and can supply additional observational data for numerical forecasting of the Earth system.

The continuous observational animation obtained from Lightning Mapping Imager (LMI) accurately depicts lightning activity during severe convective weather. The regional lightning animation shows that, influenced by the southern branch trough cloud system, vigorous convective cloud clusters developed over Bangladesh and Myanmar, accompanied by lightning events, demonstrating its application potential for severe weather monitoring and early warning.

Multi-band ionospheric ultraviolet spectral imager has conducted continuous observations of airglow phenomena over the Eastern Hemisphere, enabling detailed characterization of structural changes in the Earth's ionosphere and their potential impacts on communication, navigation and positioning signals.

Solar Extreme-UltraViolet Imager and Solar X-EUV flux monitor have successfully captured imagery animations and flux variations of solar flare eruptions, further enhancing the capability for solar activity observations.

It is reported that following the operational commissioning of FY-4C, it will significantly enhance the monitoring and early warning capacity for meso- and small-scale weather systems as well as the source monitoring capability of space weather, better serving as the first line of defense in meteorological disaster prevention and reduction.

FY meteorological satellites will serve as a vital data engine for MAZU, a Joint Action for Early Warnings for All.
