CMA and CMS initiate the Events for 2026 World Meteorological Day 2026

March 23 this year marks the 66th World Meteorological Day, with the theme of "Observing Today, Protecting Tomorrow". On March 21, the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) and the Chinese Meteorological Society (CMS) initiated the Events for World Meteorological Day 2026 in Beijing. Dr. BI Baogui, Dr. CAO Xiaozhong, Mr. XIONG Shaoyuan, Mr. Song Shanyun, Deputy Administrators of CMA; Mr. PAN Jinjun Engineer-in-Chief of CMA; Ms. JIAO Meiyan, Vice President of the CMS attended the opening ceremony. And guests from the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the State Administration for Market Regulation, the China Association for Science and Technology, Tsinghua University, and 2026 Belt and Road Meteorological Visiting Scholars were also present.

Focusing on this year's World Meteorological Day theme, the CMA join hands with various sectors of society to organize diverse and rich science popularization activities around topics such as monitoring, forecasting, and early warning of extreme weather, disaster prevention and mitigation, climate change mitigation and adaptation, and empowering high-quality economic and social development with meteorological services. Local meteorological departments nationwide carried out these activities tailored to their local characteristics, targeting different scenarios and audiences. These efforts aimed to bring meteorological science into government, schools, rural areas, communities, and enterprises, enhancing the ability of governments at all levels and the public to prevent disasters, mitigate risks, and utilize climate resources scientifically. On the same day, CMA campus was opened to the public. Visitors entered meteorological observation sites and science activity zones to gain an up-close understanding of meteorology, participating in interactive sessions, quizzes, and check-in activities, immersing themselves in the practical achievements of supporting diverse industries with meteorological services.

The CMA collaborated with meteorological departments from Tianjin, Fujian, Sichuan, Guangxi, Xinjiang, and Macao to showcase a series of themed science activities with distinct regional characteristics and innovative approaches. These included "Hands-on Disaster Prevention Experience: Growing with Technology-Assisted Disaster Reduction", "Meteorological Safeguarding: Voyaging to the Deep Blue", meteorological science carnivals, interactive sessions at the Dujiangyan Intangible Cultural Heritage Weather Station, meteorological science outreach in schools, and meteorological science dramas.

The CMA also released the Top 10 Meteorological Science and Technology Advances of China in 2025 and the first images from the FENGYUN-4C Geostationary Meteorological Satellite. It launched the 2026 Meteorological Science Popularization Tour in Thousands of Townships and Villages campaign, the Second National College Student Meteorological Science and Technology Innovation Competition, and the Second Asian Youth Student Innovation Competition on Climate Change and Health. The tenth Group of Meteorological Education Characteristic Schools was announced, and guests presented meteorological science products to student representatives from schools.

Using meteorological technology to safeguard lives globally, the CMA continuously enhances its capabilities in global monitoring, global forecasting, global services, and global governance. FENGYUN meteorological satellites serve international users in 133 countries and regions, with disaster emergency services for key areas under the Belt and Road Initiative achieving a response time of 45 minutes. The CMA launched MAZU, a Joint Action for Early Warnings for All, related products have been deployed in countries such as Mongolia and Djibouti, supporting cloud-based applications in over 40 countries worldwide. It provides high-quality meteorological data services to 153 countries and regions globally and promotes the implementation of the Belt and Road Meteorological Visiting Scholar Program.
