Tariffs

Tariffs

Energy feed in and consumption tariffs are used to calculate billing credit and debits based on the amount of energy generated or used.

The resulting amount charged or credited is affected by the following settings -



Model (Net or Gross)



Debit / Credit Rate



Time of Use





Getting Started

The energy tariff associated with a system may be changed via the system editor



Login and open the System Editor



Click on Edit Tariffs to open the Tariff Editor






Tariff Models

Tariff models determine how imports and exports are calculated from generation and consumption data received. The tariff model is be setup for import or export independently.

The two most common models are Net and Gross.


Hint

If unsure use Net for both import and export models, this is the most common. Your energy retailer will have more information which model they are using on their website or bill.



Export Models

The following models are supported when calculating energy export -

Import Models

The following models are supported when calculating energy import -

Net Model

When the Net Model is selected, the following formula is used to determine if energy is either imported or exported over a period of time (usually 5 minutes) -


Consumption-Generation=Import-Export


If consumption minus generation is positive then energy has been imported, otherwise energy has been exported.




Time of Use

Time of Use (TOU) allow different credit / debit rates to be defined for a set of time ranges.

Up to four TOU rates may be defined -



Peak



Off-Peak



Shoulder



High Shoulder





Time Periods

The Time Periods is used to determine which tariff a point in time belongs to. It allows energy imported or exported to be applied to the corresponding tariff rate.

A time range and applicable day of the week can be assigned to Peak, Shoulder and High Shoulder times. Times which do not match any of those defined are assigned to Off Peak.



Daily TOU View

The Time Of Use page displays daily time of usage and generation data.



Login



Click on Your Outputs



Click on Customise and select Display Time of Use




Or click on fourth square box below the graph to switch to Time of Use view.



Calculating Credit and Debits

Each data point received is processed as follows -



Tariff model will determine how the net energy is calculated



Time of use information is used to determine the rate



Use credit rate if exported, amount is added to the daily Credit amount



Use debit rate if imported, amount is added to the daily Debit amount







The daily balance is credit minus debit and service charges.


Hint

Changes to the TOU structure and tariff information only affects data from the time the change was applied. To update historic data with the current TOU and tariff information, a manual calculation should be performed on the desired days.




Manual Recalculation

To manually update one or more days with the current TOU and tariff data -



Login



Click Your Outputs page.



Select the days to recalculate.



Click More… to show additional options



Click Recalculate



Select Yes to also update Debits/Credits.




Selecting Yes to update Debits/Credits will multiply export amounts with credit tariffs to calculate the new Credit value. Imports amounts (peak, off-peak, shoulder and high shoulder) are multiplied with the corresponding debit tariffs to calculate the new Debit value.

Selecting No will keep existing Debit/Credit amounts.



Restrictions and Limitations



Recalculations are only available to Donation enabled accounts



A maximum of 20 days may be recalculated at a time







Tariff Plans

The tariff plan feature allows the multiple tariff settings to be saved. Each plan can define a date range in which it is active, e.g. a Summer and Winter plan with different TOU times and tariff rates.


Plan Management

Plans are defined and saved on the tariff page. To manage tariff plans -



Open the Edit Tariff page. This will load the current tariff settings.



Update the tariff and TOU information



Under the Manage Plan section



Enter the plan Name



Select Enabled



Choose a From and To date which the plan is active.



Click Save next to the plan name.



The plan now appears in the Saved Plans list.



Repeat for additional plans.






Click Save at the bottom of the Edit Tariff page.



On the System Edit page, select Enabled for the Use Tariff Plans option.





Tip

Active plans appear on the Saved Plans list with a + prefix


The saved active plans now will be used for tariff calculations. The service will decide which plan should be used based on its date.


Note

No tariffs will be calculated when the Use Tariff Plan option is not enabled and there are no active plans set.




Date Range

A plan with no date range is valid for any date. Plans with a date range are picked first, if no dated plans can be matched the plan with no date will be used.

Dates are inclusive from 00:00 of the start date till 23:55 of the end date.

If a date cannot be matched against any active plan date range, then the main tariff settings is used.


Tip

A plan with a blank date range plan should be used to capture any dates not already covered by any other plan.


The year component is not used in the date range to allow the same range to be applied to any year. When the start date is later than the end date, then the end date will advance to the following year, e.g. the range 01-Dec to 29-Feb is valid between -



01-Dec-2019 to 29-Feb-2020



01-Dec-2020 to 28-Feb-2021



etc






Importing Existing Plans

The details of plans saved by other system owners may be imported using the Import Plan search feature.

Enter part of a plan name in the search box to show the list of matching plans.

The search results displays the following information for each plan -



Plan name and the postcode / zipcode of the system which created the plan.



Plan active date range, if available.



The peak tariff rate and the peak time period.



The off peak and feed in tariff rates.




Only plans from the same country as the system will be shown.

Selecting the plan from the search result will automatically copy the plan details on to the tariff page. Importing only updates the current tariff details and does not change any existing saved plan information.


Tip

The postcode / zipcode is searchable by entering the last few letters of the plan name followed by part of the postcode. e.g. Plan 20 will match ‘My Plan’ with postcodes starting with ‘20’.




Plan Comparision

A saved plan may be applied to historic data to identify potential cost savings of that plan.

Comparisons can be used to accurately compare plan costings with different time of use and rate information using 5-minute consumption and generation data.

To compare a saved plan with the active plan -



Click Your Outputs



Click on Plan Cost below the graph.



Select the plan to compare listed below the graph.



The cumulative credit, debit, balance and saving for the plan is updated on the graph.



The table data shows the daily comparision breakdown.




A positive Saving indicates the amount saved using the selected plan compared to historic data.


Note

The last 31 days is loaded by default, use the Customise link to compare a different date range.




Restrictions and Limitations



Tariff plans are only available to Donation enabled accounts



Each system is limited to 10 plans.



Plan comparisons max date range is 31 days.



The plan comparison is only available to the owner of the system with donation mode enabled.







Changing Tariffs

Tariff and time of use information is used to calculate a daily credit and debit amount. These amounts are saved for each day using the current tariff information.

When the tariff changes due to a new plan being effective or manual update, any historic debit and credit information will be retained with the tariff and TOU it was derived from.

However, historic tariff and TOU is not retained and will only show the currently active rate when viewing older live data.

Other points to note regarding tariff changes -



Changes to the tariff rates and TOU take effect immediately unless used in a plan.



The new rates and time periods will be recalculated for the current day, e.g. a tariff change at 2:00PM on 01-Jan-2018 will be applied to the entire day 00:00 to 24:00 01-Jan-2018



Uploads to a historic day, up to 90 days in the past, will also update its tariff information with the current tariff information.



Use Tariff Plans to control when a new rate and TOU becomes effective.



The current tariff can be applied to a historic date using Manual Calculation option.
